Why you'll love it

  • Rolled topEight rounds of amber stocking stitch curl down on their own, reverse side out — no rib and no sewing.
  • Afterthought heelThe leg and foot are knitted straight through; the heel goes in at the end, where the waste yarn was.
  • Square heel and toeA small band knitted sideways and grafted gives both ends the same blunt shape.
  • Knitted tightlyÁlafosslopi on 5 mm needles at 15 stitches to 10 cm — the pattern says the socks are knitted tightly.

Good to know

Uni — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
The amber heather (9971) of the rolled top is still made by Ístex. Sapphire blue heather (9968) — the leg, foot, heel and toe — is no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses space blue (1233) in its place; it is brighter than the deep, denim-like blue of the sock in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
The pattern has two sizes, “Ladies/children” and “Men”, with 34 and 36 stitches around the foot. It gives no shoe sizes: you knit the leg to 14 (16) cm, or the length you like, and the foot for 22 (25) rounds or until it reaches a little past the little toe. Try the sock on as you go.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: 2 balls of sapphire blue heather (A) and 1 of amber heather (B). The pattern gives one amount for both sizes and does not say “per pair”; by our calculation it is enough for one pair, with most of the amber left over — it is only used for the 8-round top.
How is the heel made?
It is an afterthought heel. When the leg is long enough, you knit the 15 (16) stitches at the back with a piece of waste yarn in another colour, then knit them again in A and carry on down the foot. After the toe, you pull out the waste yarn, put the open stitches on four needles and pick up stitches at the sides to make 34 (36). The heel is then decreased to 18 (20) stitches and finished with the same sideways band as the toe.
Is anything missing from the pattern?
Two numbers are not given; both are our reading of the arithmetic. At the toe, the decrease round is worked 4 times in all (with 5, 4, 3 and then 2 stitches at the ends), taking 34 (36) stitches down to 18 (20). At the heel, pick up 2 extra stitches at each side, so you have 34 (36) again. Note too that the toe instructions call the needles A, B, C and D — these are needles, not the yarn colours A and B. And “Dec 1 stitch in each side of next row” near the top means the next round.
Who designed them?
The pattern names no designer — it is from Ístex’s Lopi 24.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, gauge, sizes and all the instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
