Good to know

Þyrnirós — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Light red (1408) is no longer made. This kit has crimson red (9434) in its place — knit it wherever the chart shows colour C: the roses in the yoke, and the two purl steek stitches on chart round 45. Crimson red is the closest red Ístex still makes, but it is a deeper red than the sunlit roses in the photo. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 84, 88, 93, 97 and 102 cm, 36 to 40 cm from hem to underarm and sleeves of 45 to 49 cm. The chest is the measurement of the cardigan itself, and it has a shaped waist.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for XL: 10 balls of black and one each of spring green heather and crimson red — 12 balls. XS and S use 8 balls of black, M and L use 9.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of small straight stitches through each by machine, cut between them, and crochet the front bands along the cut edges.
Where do I measure the waist shaping from?
The pattern says to knit 10 (10) 11 (11) 12 cm in stocking stitch before the first decrease, but not from where. Measure from the cast-on edge, rib included: the six shaping steps, 5 cm apart, then end at 35 (35) 36 (36) 37 cm, below the underarm in every size. Measured from the top of the rib, the last increase would come at or above the underarm in XS, S and M (our reading).
What is the band above the cuffs?
Large eyelet rib — two purl stitches and a column of double yarn-over holes, knitted above 6 cm of K1, P1 rib. The pattern says “Rep rnd 1–4, 4 times”; whether you read that as 4 or 5 repeats in all, the band only changes by about 2 cm (our calculation).
How are the buttons fastened?
With 7 crocheted loops on the right front band, so the buttons go on the left. The crochet text is hard to read: work 1 single crochet (UK double crochet) into every other row along the cut edge, then a second row with 3 chains at each of the 7 loop places. The buttons are not included; the photo shows small red ones.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; a 4 mm (US 6) circular needle in 80 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists the longer circulars as 60–80 cm; the kit has 80 cm. The 4.5 mm double-pointed needles are not in the pattern’s list, but the sleeves need them: after the cuff the pattern says to change to 4.5 mm needles, and a sleeve of 54–64 stitches, about 30–36 cm round, is too small for a 40 cm circular (our calculation). The crochet hook is not included.
