Þyrnirós is the Icelandic name for Sleeping Beauty — Briar Rose. Védís Jónsdóttir’s fitted women’s cardigan from Ístex’s Lopi 27 is knitted in black Léttlopi in the round and cut open at the front: a round yoke of red roses with spring green leaves and stems, a shaped waist, a band of eyelet rib above each ribbed cuff, and seven small buttons on a crocheted front band. One colour version, in sizes XS to XL. The light red of the roses (1408) is no longer made; black (0059) and spring green (1406) still are.

Gauge
18 sts × 24 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 4.5 mm needles.
Needles
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles, 40 and 60–80 cm, for the body and the yoke
4 mm (US 6) circular needle, 60–80 cm, for the body rib
3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles for the cuffs
4.5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves — not in the pattern’s list: after the cuff it only says to change to 4.5 mm needles, and a sleeve of 54–64 stitches is too small for the listed 40 cm circular (our calculation)
You will also need
A 3.5 mm (US E/4) crochet hook for the front bands, 7 small buttons (the pattern gives no size; in the photo they are small and red) and stitch markers — all three in the pattern’s list — plus stitch holders (or waste yarn) for the underarm stitches, a sewing machine to secure the front before it is cut, and needle and thread for the buttons, which the list leaves out.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up. The body starts with 2 cm of K1, P1 rib on 4 mm, worked back and forth; then two purl stitches are cast on at the centre front for the cut and the body is joined. Three decreases and three increases at each side shape the waist. The sleeves start with 6 cm of K1, P1 rib on 3.5 mm and a band of large eyelet rib. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke — a 50-round chart of red roses, green leaves and stems on black, with the decreases drawn in and the rounds to skip in the smaller sizes marked. The neckband is four rows of rib, the third a row of eyelets, bound off in rib. The front is machine-sewn and cut open, the front bands are crocheted, with 7 button loops on the right band, and the underarm stitches are grafted.
