Good to know

Þíða — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
Orange (1410), light red (1408) and sun yellow (1411) are no longer made. This kit has one ball of a replacement for each: apricot (1704) in place of orange — colour D, the band of arrows low on the yoke; crimson red (9434) in place of light red — colour E, the big rounded motifs in the middle of the yoke; and mimosa (1703) in place of sun yellow — colour F, the band of yellow near the top. Crimson red is very close: the girl’s red sweater in the same photo is knitted in crimson red, and its body and the boy’s red motifs look almost the same — the light red is perhaps a touch pinker. Apricot has the same warm hue as the orange in the photo, but it is a clearly browner, darker and duller ginger orange, so the arrows will look more muted than in the photo. Mimosa is a golden, slightly mustard yellow — stronger and more saturated than the softer yellow in the photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 2, 4, 6 and 8 years — with a chest of 63, 70, 76 and 83 cm, and 24, 27, 30 and 33 cm from the hem to the underarm. The sleeves are the same length to the underarm: 24 to 33 cm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 8 years: 6 balls of heaven blue heather and one each of navy blue, spring green heather, apricot, crimson red and mimosa — 11 balls. Sizes 2 and 4 use 9 balls, size 6 uses 10. The yoke colours are one ball each in every size, so expect some of each left over (our estimate). The pattern calls heaven blue heather and spring green heather simply “heaven blue” and “spring green”.
What are the rolled edges?
Each cuff starts, and the neckband ends, with 5 rounds of stocking stitch in navy blue (colour B). Stocking stitch curls by itself, so these rounds roll over into a soft edge beside the rib, as in the photo. The body hem is plain K1, P1 rib.
Is anything missing from the pattern?
Only small things. In the yoke the pattern says to change to shorter needles when the round gets tight, but it lists no shorter circular. The 4.5 mm double-pointed needles in the list can take over for the last rounds (our reading); a 4.5 mm circular in 40 cm makes the middle of the yoke easier if you have one (our suggestion — it is not in the kit). The materials list also leaves out stitch holders (or scrap yarn) for the underarm stitches and a tapestry needle for grafting them. In the chart, “skip rnd size …” means leave that round out in your size. We checked the stitch counts — body, sleeve increases, the yoke join, all four decrease rounds and the neckband — and found no mistakes (our check).
Which version is in the photo?
The boy wears this blue version, knitted in the original colours — orange, light red and sun yellow in the yoke. The girl wears the red version, which is sold as a separate kit. The jeans, boots and dog are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 60 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the circulars as 60–70 cm. Stitch holders and a tapestry needle are not included.
