Girl in the red Teikn dress — a round yoke of white figures that read as interlocking loops, little cap sleeves, an A-line skirt and a white band above the moss-stitch hem (shown in the original colours — this kit has crimson red, a deeper and less pink red, in place of the light red). The cream long-sleeved top and the grey leggings are not part of the pattern

Why you'll love it

  • White loops on redEvery figure in the yoke and the hem band is white, so on red they read as interlocking loops.
  • Cap sleevesStitches cast on over the shoulders and knitted in moss stitch make little cap sleeves.
  • A-lineEight stitches are taken in four or five times between hem and chest, so the dress widens towards the hem.
  • Button at the neckA short opening in the neckband closes with a crocheted loop and one little button.

Good to know

Teikn — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Light red (1408), the main colour of the red dress, is no longer made. This kit has crimson red (9434) in its place — colour
Is this the same as your Teikn sweater?
No. Our Teikn children’s sweater is a different pattern, from Lopi 34: a long-sleeved Álafosslopi sweater for ages 6 to 14. This Teikn, from Lopi 28, is a little girl’s sleeveless dress in Léttlopi for ages 2 to 5. Both carry Védís Jónsdóttir’s name, but they are separate designs with their own charts.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, 2 to 5 years, with a chest of 58, 62, 66 and 71 cm and 30 to 42 cm from the hem to the underarm. The dress is A-line: by our calculation it is about 76 to 93 cm round at the hem. In both photos it is worn over a long-sleeved top.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 5 years: 4 balls of crimson red and 1 of white — 5 balls. Sizes 2 and 3 use 3 balls of crimson red (4 in all). The one ball of white covers every figure; by our estimate they take about 30 to 35 g of it, depending on the size.
The chart is printed in several colours — how do I knit the red dress?
Follow the Red column of the key: knit the white squares (A) in crimson red, and every coloured square — green, yellow, pink and lilac (B to E) — in white. The grey squares mean “no stitch”, where stitches have been decreased.
How are the cap sleeves made?
There are no sleeves to knit separately. At the underarms the stitches are bound off, and in the next round 35 (36) 37 (38) new stitches are cast on over each shoulder. These are knitted in moss stitch for 3 rounds while the front and back go on in stocking stitch, and they form the little cap sleeves; then 3 stitches are increased over each shoulder and the yoke chart begins.
How does it close at the neck?
After the first neckband round, the last 3 rows are knitted back and forth, which leaves a short opening where the round begins — at the left side of the back (our reading). A small chain loop, crocheted with the 3.5 mm hook on the left side of the neckband, and one little button close it. The button and the hook are not included; the pattern gives no button size.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. Chart 1 (the hem band) has nine rounds, but one row has no number — the labels go 1, 2, 3, then “5 skip rnd size 2 (3) 4”. By our reading round 4 is the round of single dots just above round 3, and round 5 — left out in sizes 2, 3 and 4 — is the one plain round in the middle of the band. The shoulder increase, “*K 8 (9) 10 (10) sts, inc 1 st, k 9 (9) 9 (9) sts, inc 1 st, k 9 (9) 9 (9) sts, inc 1 st*”, covers only 26 to 28 of the 35 to 38 shoulder stitches; knit the rest plain (our reading) — the stitch count, 168 (176) 184 (192), comes out right. The neckband is moss stitch but says “Bind off in rib”: bind off in pattern. Markers are listed but no step uses them — they help to space the decreases evenly (our suggestion).
Is the white dress in the photos the same pattern?
Yes — the same sizes, charts and needles, in white with figures in pink, green, yellow and lilac. It is sold as a separate kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 60 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The button, the 3.5 mm crochet hook and the markers are not included.
