Why you'll love it

  • Figures round the yokeA 29-round chart of small figures — in four colours on white, or all in white on red, where they read as interlocking loops.
  • Cap sleevesStitches cast on over the shoulders and knitted in moss stitch make little cap sleeves.
  • A-lineEight stitches are taken in four or five times between hem and chest, so the dress widens towards the hem.
  • Button at the neckA short opening in the neckband closes with a crocheted loop and one little button.
  • Matching hem bandA border of figures, 9 rounds in size 5 and 8 in the smaller sizes, sits just above the moss-stitch hem.

Good to know

Teikn (Lopi 28) — your questions, answered

Is this the same as your Teikn sweater?
No. Our Teikn children’s sweater is a different pattern, from Lopi 34: a long-sleeved Álafosslopi sweater for ages 6 to 14. This Teikn, from Lopi 28, is a little girl’s sleeveless dress in Léttlopi for ages 2 to 5. They share the name but are different designs, with their own charts.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
White dress: white (0051), spring green (1406) and pink (1412) are still made by Ístex; sun yellow (1411) and lilac (1413) are not. Our white kit uses 1703 mimosa for sun yellow — a warm golden yellow, stronger and a little darker than the soft yellow in the photo — and 1702 milkyway for lilac, about as light but bluer and greyer, so those figures look pale lavender-blue rather than lilac. Red dress: its main colour, light red (1408), is no longer made; white (0051) still is. Our red kit uses 9434 crimson red, a clear, strong red; the dress in the photo is a lighter red with a hint of raspberry pink, so a crimson red dress looks deeper and less pink. Our shop calls 1406 and 1412 spring green heather and pink heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, 2 to 5 years, with a chest of 58, 62, 66 and 71 cm and 30, 34, 38 and 42 cm from the hem to the underarm. The chest matches the 104 to 128 stitches at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the measurement all the way round. The dress is A-line: by our calculation it is about 76 to 93 cm round at the hem. In both photos it is worn over a long-sleeved top, which is not part of the pattern.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. White dress: white (A) 3 (3, 4, 4) and one ball each of spring green, sun yellow, pink and lilac — 7 balls for 2 and 3 years, 8 for 4 and 5. Red dress: light red (A) 3 (3, 4, 4) and one ball of white for all the figures — 4 balls for 2 and 3 years, 5 for 4 and 5. By our estimate the red dress’s figures take about 30 to 35 g of the white ball, depending on the size.
The chart is printed in several colours — how do I knit the red dress?
Follow the Red column of the key: knit the white squares (A) in light red, and every coloured square — green, yellow, pink and lilac (B to E) — in white. The grey squares mean “no stitch”, where stitches have been decreased.
How are the cap sleeves made?
There are no sleeves to knit separately. At the underarms the stitches are bound off, and in the next round 35 (36, 37, 38) new stitches are cast on over each shoulder. These are knitted in moss stitch for 3 rounds while the front and back go on in stocking stitch, and they form the little cap sleeves; then 3 stitches are increased over each shoulder and the yoke chart begins.
How does it close at the neck?
After the first neckband round, the 3 rows of moss stitch are knitted back and forth, which leaves a short opening where the round begins — at the left side of the back (our reading). A small chain loop, crocheted in A on the left side of the neckband, and one little button close it. The pattern gives no button size.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. Chart 1 (the hem band) has nine rounds, but one row has no number — the labels go 1, 2, 3, then “5 skip rnd size 2 (3) 4”. By our reading round 4 is the round of single dots just above round 3, and round 5 — left out in sizes 2, 3 and 4 — is the one plain round in the middle of the band. The shoulder increase, “*K 8 (9) 10 (10) sts, inc 1 st, k 9 (9) 9 (9) sts, inc 1 st, k 9 (9) 9 (9) sts, inc 1 st*”, covers only 26 to 28 of the 35 to 38 shoulder stitches; knit the rest plain (our reading) — the stitch count, 168 (176) 184 (192), comes out right. The neckband is moss stitch but says “Bind off in rib”: bind off in pattern. Markers are listed but no step uses them — they help to space the decreases evenly (our suggestion).
Which photo shows which version?
The cover photo shows the white dress on a little girl, over a pink long-sleeved top, with white patterned tights and a pink hairband. The small photo on page 2 shows the red dress on an older girl with long braids, over a cream long-sleeved top with grey leggings. The tops, tights, leggings, hairband and hair ties are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials for both versions, the sizes, all the instructions, both charts and the key, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
