Good to know

Taska — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Mustard (9264) and orange (1410) are no longer made. This kit has mimosa (1703) in place of mustard — colour D: the yellow outlines of the diamonds, two yellow rounds and some of the small motifs — and apricot (1704) in place of orange — colour F: the orange rounds, the top round, the purl fold and, by our reading, the lining. Mimosa has the same golden hue as the muted mustard in the photo but is brighter and cleaner, so the yellow will stand out more. Apricot is a warm orange close to the one in the photo, a little deeper; it is the colour we use for the old orange (1410) on other kits too. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
The pattern lists two different blacks — which is in the kit?
The materials list says B is 0005 black heather, but the chart key says 0052. The kit follows the key: 0052 black sheep heather, a brown-black heather. In the photo the ground of the bag and the strap read brown-black rather than grey-black. B is the ground in most rounds and the whole strap. If you prefer the grey-black 0005, you can choose it in the colour picker.
How big is it?
One size: 22 cm wide and 26 cm deep, with a 120 cm strap. In the photo it is worn across the body. The sweater and jeans in the photo are not part of the pattern.
Will I have yarn left over?
The pattern lists one ball of each colour, but the kit holds 8 balls: two each of black sheep heather and apricot, and one of each of the other four. Oatmeal, white, mimosa and crimson red are used only in the chart, so most of each ball is left over. Black sheep heather (the ground and the 120 cm strap) and apricot (the orange rounds and, by our reading, the lining) are used much more — by our calculation about a whole ball each, apricot a little more, as the lining alone takes most of a ball. One ball each would leave little or nothing to spare, so we put in a second ball of both; expect some of each left over.
How do I close the bottom of the bag?
The pattern says to graft the stitches at the bottom of the bag together, but the bag starts with an ordinary cast-on, so there are no live stitches to graft. Sew the bottom edge closed instead — or, if you want to graft it, start with a provisional cast-on (our suggestion). The bottom of the lining ends on live stitches and is grafted as printed.
Is anything else unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The lining colour is not named: the text says “Continue with F, 1 rnd P” and goes straight on to the lining, so we read the lining as F (apricot in this kit). The pattern does not say how to make the button loop — a crochet chain or a twisted cord both work (our suggestion) — and gives no button size. The chart key also lists k2tog and “no st”, which this chart does not use; the 4-stitch decrease for the lining is in the text.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 40 cm; 4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles for the strap — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern says only “4 mm needles” for the strap; double-pointed needles are our choice, as the strap is only 5 stitches wide. The button is not included.
