Good to know

Taska — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Four of the six are still made by Ístex: oatmeal (0085), white (0051), crimson red (9434) and the dark ground colour, B (see below). Mustard (9264) and orange (1410) are no longer made. Our Taska kit uses 1703 mimosa in place of mustard — the same golden hue as the muted mustard in the photo, but brighter and cleaner, so the yellow stands out more — and 1704 apricot in place of orange, a warm orange close to the one in the photo, a little deeper.
The pattern gives two different codes for B — which is right?
The materials list says B is 0005 black heather; the chart key says B is 0052, and draws its square dark brown. In the photo the ground of the bag and the strap read brown-black rather than grey-black, so the key looks right (our reading). 0052 is black sheep heather in our shop, and our kit uses it. Both are still made.
How big is it?
One size: 22 cm wide and 26 cm deep, with a 120 cm strap. The bag is a tube of 80 stitches, which comes to about 22 cm across, laid flat, at the pattern’s gauge (our check). In the photo it is worn across the body.
How much yarn do I need?
The pattern lists one 50 g ball of Léttlopi in each of the six colours. Oatmeal, white, mustard and crimson red are used only in the chart, so most of each ball is left over. B (the ground and the whole 120 cm strap) and F (the orange rounds, the fold round and, by our reading, the lining) are used much more: by our calculation B takes about a whole ball and F about a whole ball or a little more, as the lining alone takes most of a ball. So there is little or nothing to spare, and if you knit even slightly more loosely than the pattern’s gauge you may run short — we suggest 2 balls of each of those two colours. Our kit has 2 of each.
How is the colourwork knitted?
In the round, in stocking stitch, from one 60-round chart over 80 stitches — an 8-stitch repeat, ten times round — with never more than two colours in a round: the cast-on in oatmeal, then bands of diamonds, small crosses, dots and solid stripes on the dark ground, with an orange round at the top. The chart has no decreases; the 4-stitch decrease for the lining is in the text.
How do I close the bottom of the bag?
The pattern says to graft the stitches at the bottom of the bag together, but the bag starts with an ordinary cast-on, so there are no live stitches to graft. Sew the bottom edge closed instead — or, if you want to graft it, start with a provisional cast-on (our suggestion). The bottom of the lining ends on live stitches and is grafted as printed.
Is anything else unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The lining colour is not named: the text says “Continue with F, 1 rnd P” and goes straight on to the lining, so we read the lining as F. The pattern does not say how to make the button loop — a crochet chain or a twisted cord both work (our suggestion) — and gives no button size. It says only “4 mm needles” for the strap, and the materials list leaves out a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The bag and its strap are. The light brown sweater, the black top under it and the grey jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with a small photo, the materials, size, gauge, instructions and the chart with its key, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
