Good to know

Stjörnur — your questions, answered

Why are four colours different from the pattern?
Ultra violet (9705), monet blue (9735), fire red (9738) and orange rust (9988) are no longer made. This kit has: space blue (1233) in place of ultra violet — colour
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 4, 6, 8 and 10 years — with a chest of 69, 75, 81 and 87 cm, 28 to 35 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 28 to 37 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives no total length; the yoke adds about 14 to 18 cm above the underarm before the collar (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 10 years: 2 balls each of space blue, blue tweed and happy red, and one each of chartreuse green heather, golden heather and amber heather — 9 balls. Size 4 uses 6 balls, size 6 uses 7 and size 8 uses 9. The pattern calls chartreuse green heather simply chartreuse and golden heather simply golden.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at each side of the front opening. When the knitting is done, you bring the yarn ends out at the purl stitches, sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches, catching the ends, and cut between the sewn rows. Then the zip is sewn in.
Which zip do I need?
A two-way separating zip — the pattern says “zipper with 2 slides” but gives no length. By our calculation the front is roughly 42 cm (size 4) to 53 cm (size 10) from the hem to the base of the collar; measure your finished cardigan before you buy the zip. It is sewn in twice with matching thread: first from the right side along the folded front edge, then the edge is slip-stitched from the wrong side. The zip is not included.
How is the collar made?
When the yoke is done, the two steek stitches are bound off and the collar is knitted back and forth in K1, P1 rib in space blue: 2.5 to 3 cm on 4.5 mm needles, then one knit row from the right side, then rib on 6 mm needles until it is 7 to 8 cm deep. It turns down at the knit row, and the bigger needles make the outer part a little wider (our reading).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. On the sleeves, after the underarm stitches go on a holder, the pattern says “=> 33 (34) 35 (36) sts”; it should be 30 (31) 32 (33) — that is what is left, and the yoke uses 30 (31) 32 (33) sleeve stitches (our calculation). The hem rib is cast on with the circular needle, but the round is only joined after it, when the steek stitches are cast on, so we read the rib as knitted back and forth. The collar says “change to 4½ mm needle”, and the only 4½ mm needles in the materials list are double-pointed: spread the 47 to 53 stitches over three of them and knit back and forth with a fourth, or use a 4.5 mm circular if you have one (our suggestion). “Stjarna 1” and “Stjarna 2” in the yoke instructions mean the two colourways, Stjörnur 1 and 2. And the materials list leaves out stitch holders, sewing thread and a tapestry needle.
Is the boy’s cardigan in the photos the same pattern?
Yes — the pattern’s second colourway, Stjörnur 2: white stars in midnight blue diamonds, with a blue tweed collar and ribs. It is sold as a separate kit; two of its colours are replaced too.
What does the kit with needles include?
6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 60 cm; 4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the longer circulars as 60–80 cm; for children’s sizes the kit has 60 cm (our choice). The zip is not included.
