Stjörnur — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Stjörnur 1: golden (9964), the colour of the stars, and chartreuse (9965) are still made by Ístex; ultra violet (9705), monet blue (9735), fire red (9738) and orange rust (9988) are not. Stjörnur 2: chartreuse (9965), happy red (0047), midnight blue (0709) and white (0051) are still made; monet blue (9735) and orange rust (9988) are not. Our blue and gold kit (Stjörnur 1) uses space blue (1233) for ultra violet — clearly brighter and more vivid, a strong royal blue rather than the muted violet-blue in the photo, so the ribs, collar and yoke ground stand out more; blue tweed (1234) for monet blue — close to it, a slightly deeper mid blue tweed, with white flecks where monet’s are many-coloured; happy red (0047) for fire red — the same clear red, a touch deeper, but plain, without the coloured flecks; and amber heather (9971) for orange rust — a little browner. Our navy and white kit (Stjörnur 2) uses blue tweed (1234) for monet blue — a little deeper and clearly more vivid than the soft blue in the photo, with white flecks where monet’s are red, orange and purple — and amber heather (9971) for orange rust. Our shop calls 9965 and 9964 chartreuse green heather and golden heather, so go by the colour numbers.
What is the difference between Stjörnur 1 and Stjörnur 2?
Only the colours. The sizes, needles and stitch counts are the same, and the charts are laid out the same; each colourway has its own printed charts and colour key. Stjörnur 1 (on the girl): golden stars in monet blue and fire red diamonds, orange rust zigzags and chartreuse stripes, with ultra violet ribs, collar and yoke ground. Stjörnur 2 (on the boy): white stars in midnight blue diamonds, with happy red, orange rust and chartreuse bands and monet blue ribs, collar and bands.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 4, 6, 8 and 10 years — with a chest of 69, 75, 81 and 87 cm all the way round, 28 to 35 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 28 to 37 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives no total length; the yoke adds about 14 to 18 cm above the underarm before the collar (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Stjörnur 1: ultra violet (A) 1 (2, 2, 2), chartreuse (B) 1, monet blue (C) 1 (1, 2, 2), fire red (D) 1 (1, 2, 2), golden (E) 1 and orange rust (F) 1 — 6 (7, 9, 9) balls. Stjörnur 2: monet blue (A) 1 (1, 2, 2), chartreuse (B) 1, happy red (C) 1, midnight blue (D) 2, white (E) 1 and orange rust (F) 1 — 7 (7, 8, 8) balls.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at each side of the front opening. When the knitting is done, you bring the yarn ends out at the purl stitches, sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches, catching the ends, and cut between the sewn rows. Then the zip is sewn in.
Which zip do I need?
A two-way separating zip — the pattern says “zipper with 2 slides” but gives no length. By our calculation the front is roughly 42 cm (size 4) to 53 cm (size 10) from the hem to the base of the collar; measure your finished cardigan before you buy the zip. It is sewn in twice with matching thread: first from the right side along the folded front edge, then the edge is slip-stitched from the wrong side.
How is the collar made?
When the yoke is done, the two steek stitches are bound off and the collar is knitted back and forth in K1, P1 rib in colour
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. On the sleeves, after the underarm stitches go on a holder, the pattern says “=> 33 (34) 35 (36) sts”; it should be 30 (31) 32 (33) — that is what is left, and the yoke uses 30 (31) 32 (33) sleeve stitches (our calculation). The hem rib is cast on with the circular needle, but the round is only joined after it, when the steek stitches are cast on, so we read the rib as knitted back and forth. The collar says “change to 4½ mm needle”, and the only 4½ mm needles in the materials list are double-pointed: spread the 47 to 53 stitches over three of them and knit back and forth with a fourth, or use a 4.5 mm circular if you have one (our suggestion). “Stjarna 1” and “Stjarna 2” in the yoke instructions mean the two colourways, Stjörnur 1 and 2. And the materials list leaves out stitch holders, sewing thread and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans and their zips are — Stjörnur 1 on the girl on the cover, Stjörnur 2 on the boy. The zip is not included. The girl’s headband, denim skirt, tights and shoes and the boy’s beanie and jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo of Stjörnur 2, the materials for both colourways, the sizes, the gauge and all the instructions; a page with the three Stjörnur 1 charts, the Stjörnur 2 yoke chart and both colour keys; and a page with the Stjörnur 2 body and sleeve charts, its key again and Ístex’s address.
