Good to know

Sól — your questions, answered

Is this a knitting or a crochet project?
Mainly crochet. The bag, the strap and the edging are single crochet on a 6 mm hook, which is not in the kit. Only the three pockets and the three small squares on the flap are knitted, in moss stitch on 5 mm needles. You need to know single crochet to make this bag.
Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Ultra violet (9705) and orange rust (9988) are no longer made. This kit has space blue (1233) in place of ultra violet — colour C: the widest stripe (12 rows), one of the strap pockets, the centre square on the flap and one flower — and amber heather (9971) in place of orange rust — colour E: the last stripe (9 rows), one stripe of the bag pocket and the other strap pocket. In the photo the C stripe is a medium blue-violet. The Álafosslopi made today has no violet that light — its only purple is almost black — so we chose space blue: about as bright, but clearly bluer, so the bag will read blue where the photo is purple. Amber heather is the same rust-orange hue as the orange rust, a little browner and duller. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
How big is it?
One size: 28 cm wide, 22 cm high and 6 cm deep. The pattern gives no strap length. By our calculation the strap strip is about 140 cm long; about 22 cm at each end is joined to the sides of the bag (our reading), which leaves roughly 96 cm to go over the shoulder. The jacket, jeans and music player in the photo are not part of the pattern.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes. The kit holds one 100 g ball of each of the six colours, as the pattern lists — 6 balls. By our estimate even the most-used colours — space blue, fuchsia and golden — take only part of a ball, so expect leftovers of every colour.
How is the strap attached?
The pattern describes it briefly: with happy red and the 6 mm hook, start by joining the orange side of the bag (amber heather in this kit) to the golden side of the strap — the end with the space blue pocket — 22 cm from the end of the strap, work both sides the same, then go on round the flap, join the other end of the strap the same way, and finish along the opening and round the strap. By our reading the last 22 cm at each end of the strap is crocheted to the side edges of the bag, so the strap also forms the 6 cm sides. Pin the pieces together before you start.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The flap squares in the photo don’t match the text: the text has the centre square in colour C with a chartreuse flower, the left one golden with a C flower and the right one chartreuse with a red flower, but in the photo the centre square is red, and the two side squares are the other way round when you look at the bag from the front — they match the text if left and right mean the wearer’s left and right (our reading). A C square would hardly show on the C stripe it sits on, so you may prefer another colour there — every colour in the kit will do (our suggestion). The second strap pocket gives no stitch or row count; make it like the first, 8 stitches and 28 rows (our reading). The pattern gives no knitting gauge and no amount of lining fabric. And the size table says “Hight” for height.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 40 cm, used back and forth for the pockets and the flap squares — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern says only “5 mm needles”; the 40 cm circular is our choice, as the knitted pieces are only 6 to 16 stitches wide. The 6 mm crochet hook — the main tool for this bag — is not included, nor are the lining fabric and the clasps.
