Good to know

Sól — your questions, answered

Is this a knitting or a crochet pattern?
Mainly crochet. The bag, the strap and the edging are single crochet on a 6 mm hook; only the three pockets and the three small squares on the flap are knitted, in moss stitch on 5 mm needles. You need to know single crochet to make this bag.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Four of the six are still made by Ístex: fuchsia heather (9969), chartreuse heather (9965), golden heather (9964) and happy red (0047). Ultra violet (9705) and orange rust (9988) are no longer made. Our Sól kit uses 1233 space blue in place of ultra violet — about as bright, but clearly bluer, so the widest stripe reads blue where the photo is purple — and 9971 amber heather in place of orange rust, the same rust-orange hue, a little browner and duller. Our shop calls 9965 chartreuse green heather.
How big is it?
One size: 28 cm wide, 22 cm high and 6 cm deep. The pattern gives no strap length. By our calculation the strap strip is about 140 cm long; about 22 cm at each end is joined to the sides of the bag (our reading), which leaves roughly 96 cm to go over the shoulder.
How much yarn do I need?
One 100 g ball of Álafosslopi in each of the six colours. By our estimate even the most-used colours — ultra violet (the widest stripe), fuchsia heather and golden heather — take only part of a ball.
How is the strap attached?
The pattern describes it briefly: with happy red and the 6 mm hook, start by joining the orange side of the bag to the yellow (golden) side of the strap at the end with the violet pocket, 22 cm from the end of the strap, work both sides the same, then go on round the flap, join the other end of the strap the same way, and finish along the opening and round the strap. By our reading the last 22 cm at each end of the strap is crocheted to the side edges of the bag, so the strap also forms the 6 cm sides.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The flap squares in the photo don’t all match the text: the text has the centre square in ultra violet with a chartreuse flower, the left one golden with a violet flower and the right one chartreuse with a red flower. In the photo the centre square is red, and the two side squares are the other way round when you look at the bag from the front — they match the text if left and right mean the wearer’s left and right (our reading). The second strap pocket gives no stitch or row count; make it like the first, 8 stitches and 28 rows (our reading). The pattern gives no knitting gauge and no amount of lining fabric. And the size table says “Hight” for height.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The bag is — with its strap, pockets and flap squares. The black jacket, the jeans, and the white music player in the violet strap pocket and its earphones are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with a small photo, the materials, size, gauge and all the instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
