Good to know

Sokkar — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Sun yellow (1411) is no longer made. This kit has mimosa (1703) in its place — the socks are one colour, so the whole pair is knitted in mimosa. Mimosa is a golden yellow, close to the yellow pair in the photo (top right), but that pair is knitted in the old sun yellow, so the shade will not be exactly the same. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, for ages 2, 4 and 6: 24, 32 and 36 stitches around. The pattern prints no gauge and no measurements, so we can’t give a foot length. Note the big step from age 2 to age 4 (24 to 32 stitches). If you know the child’s foot length, knit a few more or fewer plain rounds in the foot before the toe (our suggestion).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds 2 balls of mimosa — the pattern’s amount for a pair in age 6. Ages 2 and 4 use one ball per pair, so the kit makes two pairs in those sizes (our calculation from the pattern’s amounts).
How is the heel made?
It is an afterthought heel. On the way down you knit the first half of the stitches with waste yarn (the pattern says “to holder”), slip them back and knit them again with the sock yarn. After the toe, take out the waste yarn, pick up all the stitches round the opening — 24 (32) 36, the whole round — and knit the heel like the toe. The waste yarn is not included.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
In the decreases, “work to end of rnd” and “until 3 sts are left of rnd” mean the end of each needle — each of the four needles holds a quarter of the stitches. And after “Knit 1 rnd”, decrease every round until 8 stitches are left; then every size comes out at exactly 8 (our reading).
What does the kit with needles include?
A set of 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern.
