A young man and a young woman by a wire fence with wooden posts, in the two versions of Snæfellsjökull. He wears the black version: a black Álafosslopi sweater with grey peaks rising into a white upper yoke and a high white ribbed collar. She wears the red version: ruby red with black peaks rising into a light blue band; above that band her upper yoke and collar look a darker blue, though the pattern lists only one blue. The jeans and the shoes are not part of the pattern

Good to know

Snæfellsjökull — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
The pattern’s colours, yes: black (0005), grey (0057), white (0051), ruby red (9962) and light indigo (9958) are all still made by Ístex. One thing to know: the red sweater in the photo shows two blues — a light blue band above the black peaks and a darker blue upper yoke and collar — but the pattern lists only one blue, 9958 light indigo, for the whole upper yoke. This leaflet calls 0005 black; other Ístex leaflets and our shop call it black heather. Our shop adds “heather” to grey and ruby red too, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — S, M, L, XL and XXL — with a chest of 92, 100, 108, 115 and 123 cm all the way round and 42 to 46 cm from the hem to the underarm. Sleeves: 49 to 53 cm for men; 46 to 49 cm for women in sizes S to XL — the pattern prints no women’s sleeve length for XXL. The pattern gives no total length.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same for both versions: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) balls of the main colour (A), 1 ball of colour B in every size and 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) of colour C — 8 (9, 9, 10, 11) balls in all.
How is the collar knitted?
After the yoke chart you change to 4.5 mm, knit one round and decrease 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) stitches evenly, to 54 (56, 58, 60, 62). Then 3 cm of K1, P1 rib, change to 6 mm, 6 cm more of rib, and bind off in rib.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The colour of the collar is not stated; by our reading it stays in the light colour C, as on the black version in the photo, where it is white. The red version in the photo does not quite match the printed colours: its upper yoke and collar look a darker blue than the light blue band above the black peaks, but the pattern lists only one blue, 9958 light indigo. No women’s sleeve length is printed for XXL. The list leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are. The jeans and the shoes are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of both versions; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials for both colours, gauge, notes, the body, the sleeves, the yoke and the chart with its key; a page with the collar and the finishing; and Ístex’s back cover.
