Good to know

Skotta — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Sun yellow (1411) is no longer made. This kit has mimosa (1703) in its place — colour C: the lower wings of the butterflies. Mimosa is practically the same golden yellow as the lower wings in the photo. It is the same replacement as on the red Fiðrildaslóð cardigan, so dress and cardigan still match. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 years — with a chest of 55, 61, 67, 72 and 78 cm and a length of 45, 50, 55, 63 and 70 cm. It is an A-line dress, 78 to 100 cm round the hem. The pattern says you can knit more or fewer rounds between the skirt decreases for a longer or shorter dress; a longer dress takes more yarn. It is sleeveless, made to be worn over a top or blouse — the white blouse in the photo is not part of the pattern.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 8 years: 5 balls of crimson red and one each of black, mimosa and white — 8 balls. Size 2 uses 6 balls, sizes 3 and 4 use 7, and size 6 uses 8. White makes both the hem and the upper wings. The golden embroidery yarn is not included.
What is the “golden yarn”?
The red dress’s butterfly bodies and antennae are embroidered in “golden yarn”, but the pattern gives no code or amount, so it is not in the kit. In the photo it looks like a shiny gold thread. Any fine gold thread or yarn will do; a strand split from leftover mimosa is another option (our suggestion). The bodies are worked in duplicate stitch down the centre of each butterfly and the antennae in backstitch, as marked on the chart.
How does it go on?
The left shoulder opens. The right shoulder is joined, and the left one closes with 3–4 small buttons through buttonholes made in the crochet edging on the front shoulder. The pattern gives no button size. The buttons and the 3.5 mm crochet hook are not included.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things, by our reading. The hem rib: “Rep rnd 1–4, 1 (2) 2 (3) 3 times” means work rounds 1–4 once and then repeat them 1 (2) 2 (3) 3 more times; in sizes 2 and 4, work rounds 1–2 once more. That gives the 5 (6) 7 (8) 8 holes the pattern mentions. The last skirt decrease, 4 stitches at the sides only, has no spacing — work it the same number of rounds after the one before. After the front neck shaping, “work without further shaping 12 (13) 14 (15) 16 cm and front measures the same as back” means work until the armhole measures 12 (13) 14 (15) 16 cm, the same as the back — not 12–16 cm more.
Is there a blue version?
Yes — a lapis blue skirt with a white band of crimson red and apricot butterflies and, by our reading, a navy bodice. It is sold as a separate kit; the pattern has no photo of it.
Is there a matching cardigan?
Yes — Fiðrildaslóð, the butterfly yoke cardigan from the same Lopi 27, with the same butterflies. It is sold as separate kits in blue (lapis blue with a white yoke) and in red (crimson red with a black yoke). The red cardigan is the one beside the dress in the photo.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 3.5 mm crochet hook, the buttons and the golden embroidery yarn are not included.
