Good to know

Skotta — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the pattern?
Red dress: crimson red (9434), black (0059) and white (0051) are still made by Ístex; sun yellow (1411), the lower wings, is not. Our red kit uses 1703 mimosa, practically the same golden yellow as the lower wings in the photo. Blue dress: lapis blue (1403), white (0051), crimson red (9434), navy blue (9420) and the two embroidery colours, spring green (1406) and heaven blue (1402), are still made; orange (1410), the lower wings, is not. Our blue kit uses 1704 apricot, a warm ginger orange, browner and darker than a bright orange. Our shop calls 1403, 1406 and 1402 lapis blue heather, spring green heather and heaven blue heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Is there a photo of the blue version?
No — the pattern shows only the red dress. The blue one has a lapis blue skirt with a lapis blue eyelet-rib hem, a white band of butterflies with crimson red upper wings and orange lower wings, green and blue embroidered bodies, and — by our reading — a navy blue bodice (see below).
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 years — with a chest of 55, 61, 67, 72 and 78 cm and a length of 45, 50, 55, 63 and 70 cm. It is an A-line dress, 78 to 100 cm round the hem. The chest is the measurement all the way round at the top of the skirt: 100 to 140 stitches at the pattern’s gauge (our check). The pattern says you can knit more or fewer rounds between the skirt decreases for a longer or shorter dress. It is sleeveless; in the photo it lies over a white blouse, which is not part of the pattern.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, 6 (7, 7, 8, 8) balls for either version. Red dress: crimson red (A) 3 (4, 4, 5, 5) and one ball each of black, sun yellow and white, plus “golden yarn” for the embroidery, with no code or amount printed. Blue dress: lapis blue (A) 2 (3, 3, 4, 4) and one ball each of white, orange, crimson red and navy blue, plus spring green and heaven blue for the embroidery, with no amount printed — only a few metres of each (our estimate).
What colour is the blue dress’s bodice?
The pattern doesn’t say outright. After the butterfly band it says to knit 3 rounds in E (navy blue) and goes on to the bodice without naming a colour; the crochet edging is navy too. By the amounts the bodice is navy: the lapis blue is one ball less than the red dress’s main colour although it also makes the hem, so it can only cover the hem and the skirt (our reading).
Is one ball of navy enough?
The pattern lists one ball of navy blue for every size. By our estimate the bodice, the 3 navy rounds and the crochet edging take about a whole 50 g ball in size 8 and a little less in size 6, so in those sizes one ball leaves little or nothing to spare; our blue kit has two balls of navy for them.
How are the butterflies’ bodies made?
They are embroidered after the knitting, as marked on the chart: the bodies in duplicate stitch (Swiss darning) down the centre of each butterfly and the antennae in backstitch. For the blue dress the pattern says to split the yarn into two strands and embroider with one, giving the butterflies green and blue bodies in turn. For the red dress it uses “golden yarn”, with no code or amount; in the photo it looks like a shiny gold thread.
How does it go on?
The left shoulder opens. The right shoulder is grafted, and the left one closes with 3–4 small buttons through buttonholes made in the crochet edging on the front shoulder. The pattern gives no button size.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things, by our reading. The hem rib: “Rep rnd 1–4, 1 (2) 2 (3) 3 times” means work rounds 1–4 once and then repeat them 1 (2) 2 (3) 3 more times; in sizes 2 and 4, work rounds 1–2 once more. That gives the 5 (6) 7 (8) 8 holes the pattern mentions. The last skirt decrease, 4 stitches at the sides only, has no spacing — work it the same number of rounds after the one before. After the front neck shaping, “work without further shaping 12 (13) 14 (15) 16 cm and front measures the same as back” means work until the armhole measures 12 (13) 14 (15) 16 cm, the same as the back — not 12–16 cm more.
Is the cardigan in the photo part of this pattern?
No. The red cardigan behind the dress is Fiðrildaslóð, Lopi 27 no. 1, the matching butterfly yoke cardigan from the same book — a separate pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials for both versions, the sizes and all the instructions, a page with the butterfly chart and its key, and Ístex’s back cover.
