Good to know

Sara — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
Hazel heather (1401), orange (1410) and sun yellow (1411) are no longer made. This kit has chocolate heather (0867) in place of hazel heather — colour
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 1, 2, 3 and 4 years — with a chest of 54, 60, 64 and 68 cm, 18 to 26 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 18 to 26 cm to the underarm. The body is decreased twice on the way up, so it is a little wider at the hem: about 60 to 73 cm round just above the welt (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 4 years: 3 balls of chocolate heather and one ball each of the other nine colours — 12 balls. Sizes 1 to 3 use 2 balls of chocolate heather (11 in all). Each stripe colour is used for only a few rounds in every repeat, so expect leftovers of all nine (our estimate). The pattern calls spring green heather (1406) simply “spring green”.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with two purl stitches at the centre front. When the collar is done, you sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows. The front bands are then picked up along the cut edges.
How does it fasten?
With 5 buttons on the left band and 5 buttonholes (yarn over, knit 2 together) in the right band — the top one where the collar begins, the bottom one in the middle of the hem rib, the others evenly between. The pattern gives no button size. The buttons are not included.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The pattern doesn’t say what colour the front bands are; in the photo they are brown like the collar, so knit them in chocolate heather (our reading). The collar and bands are knitted back and forth, but the pattern says “rnds” for them — read rows. In size 3, the stitch counts in the second body decrease round add up to one stitch more than is on the needle; the round ends with “rest of rnd”, so just knit what is left. Chart 2 shows only the yoke decreases, not the stripes: carry on with the stripe order from chart 1. And the 3½ mm needles are printed as US 3; they are US 4.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 60 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists the 3.5 mm circular in 40 cm as well; on the 3.5 mm circular everything is knitted back and forth — the hem rib, the start of the collar and the front bands — so the kit has the 60 cm only (our choice). Near the top of the yoke, when only 57 to 65 stitches are left, the 4.5 mm double-pointed needles may be easier than the 40 cm circular (our suggestion). The buttons are not included.
