Good to know

Sara — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Seven of the ten are still made by Ístex: murky (1420), spring green (1406), frostbite (1417), brick heather (9431), barley (1419), moor (1416) and straw (1418). Hazel heather (1401), orange (1410) and sun yellow (1411) are no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 0867 chocolate heather for hazel heather — a darker brown than the warm mid-brown hazel in the photo, so the edges and collar look darker — 1704 apricot for orange, deeper and browner than the bright orange stripes, and 1703 mimosa for sun yellow, a warm golden yellow, a little deeper and more golden than the yellow stripes in the photo. Our shop calls 1406 spring green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 1, 2, 3 and 4 years — with a chest of 54, 60, 64 and 68 cm, 18 to 26 cm from hem to underarm, and sleeves of 18 to 26 cm to the underarm. The body is decreased twice on the way up, so it is a little wider at the hem: about 60 to 73 cm round just above the welt (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: hazel heather (A) 2 (2, 2, 3) and one ball each of the other nine colours — 11 balls for 1, 2 and 3 years, 12 for 4 years. Each stripe colour is used for only a few rounds in every repeat, so expect leftovers of all nine (our estimate).
How do the stripes work?
Chart 1 gives the order of the stripes, 28 rounds from the bottom up: 2 rounds hazel heather, 3 orange, 2 murky, 1 spring green, 3 sun yellow, 3 frostbite, 2 brick heather, 1 orange, 3 barley, 3 moor, 2 spring green and 3 straw, then from the start again. The sleeves follow the same order and end at the same point as the body. The yoke chart shows only the decreases, not the colours, because the yoke starts at a different point in the stripes in each size; carry on with the stripe order from chart 1 — the pattern says you can colour in the yoke chart for your size. In the chart key, murky (1420) is printed as a tan yellow.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with two purl stitches at the centre front. When the collar is done, you sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows. The front bands are then picked up along the cut edges. You need a sewing machine; it is not in the pattern’s list.
How does it fasten?
With 5 buttons on the left band and 5 buttonholes (yarn over, knit 2 together) in the right band — the top one where the collar begins, the bottom one in the middle of the hem rib, the others evenly between. The pattern gives no button size.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The pattern doesn’t say what colour the front bands are; in the photo they are brown like the collar, so knit them in hazel heather (our reading). The collar and bands are knitted back and forth, but the pattern says “rnds” for them — read rows. In size 3, the stitch counts in the second body decrease round add up to one stitch more than is on the needle; the round ends with “rest of rnd”, so just knit what is left. And the 3½ mm needles are printed as US 3; they are US 4.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is, in the pattern’s original colours. The white trousers, the grey sock and the grey zipped piece of clothing just below the hem are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, gauge, the body and the start of the sleeves, the yoke chart, the stripe chart and the key; a page with the rest of the sleeves, the yoke, the collar, the finishing and the front bands; and Ístex’s back cover.
