Overview
What's in the kit
Rú — Védís Jónsdóttir’s ribbed shoulder collar from Ístex’s Lopi 28, in plum heather Plötulopi. It starts as a close rib at the neck in three strands of Plötulopi, then the strands are doubled and tripled and the needles grow to 12 mm, so the collar flares out over the shoulders; five buttons close the front.
Included
- Icelandic Plötulopi wool yarn — yarn for the largest size is included, so every size is covered
- Knitting pattern in English (PDF) — emailed right after purchase
- ADDI knitting needles — only if you choose the kit with needles
Plötulopi — 100 g plates · sizes S/M (L/XL) — the pattern gives 3 plates for both
A 1428 Plum Heather — 3 (3)
Size
Two sizes, S/M and L/XL. The pattern gives no finished measurements; the sizes differ by 4 stitches (78 or 82 cast on).
Gauge
One k2, p2 repeat (4 stitches) = 2.5 cm in 3-ply Plötulopi on 6.5 mm needles, 4 cm in 6-ply on 10 mm and 5.5 cm in 9-ply on 12 mm.
Needles used in the pattern (included when you choose the kit with needles)
6.5 mm (US 10½), 10 mm (US 15) and 12 mm (US 17) circular needles, 80 cm (the pattern says 60–80 cm; the collar is knitted back and forth)
Not included
5 buttons and a 6 mm crochet hook for the edging and button loops.
How it is knitted
Knitted back and forth from the neck down. 78 (82) stitches are cast on in 3-ply Plötulopi on 6.5 mm: 16 rows of 2×2 rib, a decrease row, 12 rows of 2×1 rib and an increase row back to 78 (82) stitches. Then 10 rows of 2×2 rib in 6-ply on 10 mm and 10 rows in 9-ply on 12 mm — the stitch count stays the same, so the thicker yarn and bigger needles make the collar flare over the shoulders. It is bound off very loosely in rib. A row of single crochet in 3-ply goes up each front edge, with five chain loops for the buttons on the right edge.
