Good to know

Rú — your questions, answered

What do 3-ply, 6-ply and 9-ply mean?
Strands of Plötulopi held together, not different yarns. Plötulopi is unspun Icelandic wool, sold in plates of about 100 g. You first wind three strands softly together into three balls of different sizes; one ball is 3-ply, two balls together are 6-ply and all three together are 9-ply. It all comes from the same 3 plates of plum heather.
Which size should I knit?
S/M or L/XL. The pattern gives no finished measurements; the two sizes differ only by 4 stitches, 78 or 82 cast on. At the pattern’s gauge that is about 49 or 51 cm along the neck edge and 107 or 113 cm along the lower edge, from one front edge to the other, before stretching (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
3 plates of Plötulopi (about 100 g each) in plum heather, 1428 — the pattern gives the same amount for both sizes. The crocheted edges use the same yarn, in 3-ply.
Why does it flare?
After the 2×1 rib the stitch count stays at 78 (82) to the end, but the yarn goes from 3-ply to 6-ply to 9-ply and the needles from 6.5 to 10 to 12 mm. Each k2, p2 repeat grows from 2.5 cm to 4 cm to 5.5 cm, so the lower edge is more than twice as wide as the neck edge (our calculation from the gauge).
What else do I need?
5 buttons and a 6 mm (US J) crochet hook — both in the pattern’s list. The pattern gives no button size; the loops are 5 chains, “or as many chains as required” for your buttons. In the photo the buttons are round and silver-tone.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two small things. The collar is knitted back and forth on circular needles, not in the round, although only circular needles are listed. And the increase row, “k2, M1, p1”, does not say how to make the new stitch; it becomes part of a purl pair in the 2×2 rib that follows, so make it purlwise (our reading).
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, gauge and instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
