Rökkur (Lopi 24) — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Jungle green (9980) is no longer made. This kit has cypress green heather (9966) in its place — the only colour, used for the whole cardigan. In the photo the old yarn knits up in uneven bands of olive and near-black. The pattern lists only this one colour, so we read the bands as coming from the yarn itself, a multi-toned yarn (our reading of the photo; the pattern does not say so). No colour in today’s Álafosslopi range knits up in bands like this, so cypress green heather gives one even, heathered dark green without the bands. It is close to the overall shade of the photo, but not to its stripes. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Is this the same Rökkur as your other Rökkur kit?
No. This Rökkur is from Lopi 24 (no. 3): a men’s zip cardigan in moss stitch. The Rökkur from Lopi 33 is a different pattern — a patterned cardigan with a shawl collar by Bergrós Kjartansdóttir — and has its own kit.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, 50, 52 and 54 (European men’s sizes), with a chest of 100, 107 and 114 cm, a length of 65 to 69 cm to the shoulder and sleeves of 51 to 53 cm to the underarm. There is no rib at the hem or cuffs.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for sizes 52 and 54: 12 balls of cypress green heather, enough for the pockets and collar too. Size 50 uses 11.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
We found three, all in sizes 52 and 54; size 50 is not affected. 1) The fronts are printed “cast on 31 (36) 36 stitches”. Our reading of the arithmetic is 31 (33) 35: with those numbers the back and fronts add up to the chests in the size table (100, 107 and 114 cm), and the front shoulders match the back. 2) Size 54, back: 2 stitches are left over at the shoulders — work 17 (not 16) stitches before the neck cast-off, and cast off the last 6 (not 5) on each shoulder (our calculation). 3) Size 54, sleeve cap: the decreases leave 9 stitches, not the 11 printed — cast off the 9 (our calculation).
Which zip do I need?
An open-ended (separating) zip, 65 cm long — the pattern gives the same length for all three sizes, with the top end hidden inside the folded collar. Measure your finished front edge before you buy it, especially for size 50. The zip is not included.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 6 mm (US 10) circular needle in 80 cm; a 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives no lengths; everything is knitted back and forth, so 80 cm is plenty. The zip is not included.
