Young woman with blonde hair pulled back, standing in front of rough stone pillars, wearing Nú in the pattern’s light grey (ash heather) — a plain bulky sweater with a round yoke, the knitted-on ribbed collar folded over, and a rolled hem. The small stud earring and the black skirt are not part of the pattern. The Lopi logo and www.istex.is are printed on the photo

Why you'll love it

  • Two collars, your choiceThe yoke ends with “work collar of your choice”: a 16 cm ribbed collar knitted on with a 10 mm needle, or a separate loose collar of striped Léttlopi rib, knitted on 4 mm.
  • Bulky and looseBulky Lopi on 12 mm needles, 8 stitches to 10 cm — “the sweater is loosely knitted and could grow a little longer after rinsing”, the pattern notes.
  • Plain edgesNo rib at the hem or cuffs — body and sleeves are stocking stitch from the cast-on, and in the light grey photo the hem rolls.
  • No colourworkThe round yoke is shaped by five decrease rounds, each decrease at the start of a repeat, so they stack into lines towards the neck — our reading, and the lines show in the light grey photo.

Good to know

Nú — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For the light grey sweater, yes: Bulky Lopi ash heather (0054) is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it light ash heather. The orange sweater’s carrot red (Bulky Lopi 1418) is no longer made, and neither are three of the four loose-collar colours — Léttlopi dark wine (9417), orange (1410) and sun yellow (1411). Crimson red (Léttlopi 9434) is still made. We have no kit for the orange sweater or the loose collar.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, S, M and L, with a chest of 95, 100 and 110 cm all the way round — exactly the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check). The body is knitted to 40 (41, 42) cm to the underarm and the sleeves to 46 (47, 48) cm. The size table lists “body length to underarm” as 56 (58, 60) cm; by our calculation that is the full length to the neck — the body plus the 18 (19, 20) rounds of the yoke. Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Bulky Lopi in 100 g hanks: light grey 7 (7, 8), orange 6 (6, 7). The leaflet does not say why the orange takes one hank fewer (it is shown with the loose collar, not the knitted-on one). The loose collar takes one 50 g ball of Léttlopi in each of its four colours.
How is the loose collar made?
On its own, as a tube of rib in Léttlopi on a 4 mm circular needle: 116 stitches of knit 1, purl 1 in stripes of dark wine, orange, crimson red and sun yellow, then 12 rounds of knit 2, purl 2 in dark wine, then knit 3, purl 2 on 145 stitches, ending with crimson red, orange and sun yellow. The sweater’s neck is simply bound off, and the collar sits loose around it, as in the orange photo. The pattern gives no gauge or measurements for the collar.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
The size table’s “body length to underarm”, as above. The heading for the second neck finish is cut short, “Sweater with loose” — it means the sweater with the loose collar. The materials list leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle. The stitch counts add up (our check).
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters and the loose collar are. In the light grey photo the small stud earring and the black skirt are not. In the orange photo, on page 2 of the PDF, the red bag with a striped strap and the jeans are not. Our photo shows the light grey sweater.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the light grey sweater; a page with a small photo of the orange sweater with the loose collar, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and all the instructions; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
