Norður — Grey Children’s V-Neck Cardigan Knitting Kit

Guðrún Ragna Sigurjónsdóttir’s Norður — north — from Ístex’s Lopi 32: a children’s V-neck cardigan in ash heather Léttlopi, a light grey, knitted flat in pieces. Rust heather frames it — rib, front bands and cuffs — and rust diagonal lines with small yellow and white diamonds are knitted in intarsia across the upper back and fronts, above a border of crosses at the hem. The sleeves are plain. For ages 2 to 10. The pattern’s sun yellow (1411) is no longer made; this kit has 1703 mimosa in its place.

The pattern prints a chest of 58 (66, 72, 78, 82) cm, but its own stitch counts give a much wider cardigan. We think the printed figures are wrong, so the chest above is our calculation from the stitch counts and the gauge, with the front bands overlapped.

How it is knitted
The back and both fronts are knitted flat, as separate pieces, from 3 cm of K1, P1 rib in rust heather on 4 mm needles. On 4.5 mm comes a 9-row border of crosses, then plain stocking stitch, then diagonal lines and diamonds in intarsia on the upper back and fronts, with the armholes and shoulders bound off in steps. Each front keeps 10 stitches of rib at its front edge all the way up, and the V-neck is decreased just inside them; the left front band has the buttonholes. Above the shoulder each band carries on for a few centimetres, and the two ends meet at the centre back of the neck. The sleeves are plain: knitted in the round from a 6 cm rib cuff to the underarm, then back and forth for a shaped cap, and set in. All the pieces are sewn together from the right side.
