Good to know

Norður — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For the black version, yes: black (0059), brick heather (9431), crimson red (9434) and white (0051) are all still made by Ístex. For the grey version, three of the four are: light ash (0056), rust heather (9427) and white (0051). Sun yellow (1411) is no longer made — it is one ball, used only for the small diamonds and the line through the border of crosses. Our grey kit uses 1703 mimosa in its place, a golden, slightly mustard yellow, a little stronger than the soft yellow in the photo. Our shop calls 0056 ash heather (its light ash heather is a different colour, 0054), so go by the colour numbers.
The charts are printed in the grey version’s colours — how do I knit the black one?
The key gives two codes for each colour, grey first and black second: A is 0056 light ash or 0059 black (the light grey squares), B is 9427 rust heather or 9431 brick heather (the rust squares), C is 1411 sun yellow or 9434 crimson red (the yellow squares), and D is 0051 white in both (the white squares). So for the black cardigan, knit black on the grey squares, brick heather on the rust ones, crimson red on the yellow ones and white on the white ones.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, for ages 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10: 36, 40, 44, 48 and 52 cm long to the shoulder, 24, 25, 28, 32 and 35 cm to the underarm, and sleeves of 24, 28, 32, 36 and 40 cm. The pattern prints a chest of 58 (66, 72, 78, 82) cm, but that does not match its own stitch counts: the back and fronts come to about 71 (73, 84, 93, 97) cm round the chest, buttoned (our calculation from the stitches and the gauge). We think the printed chest is wrong, so go by our figures — and note that ages 2 and 4 come out almost the same round the chest.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Grey: light ash (0056) 4 (4, 5, 6, 7), rust heather (9427) 2 (2, 2, 3, 3), and one ball each of sun yellow (1411) and white (0051) — 8 (8, 9, 11, 12) balls. Black: black (0059) 4 (5, 6, 8, 8) and one ball each of brick heather (9431), crimson red (9434) and white (0051) — 7 (8, 9, 11, 11) balls.
Which colour is the rib?
The cast-on lines for the back, fronts and sleeves say colour B for ages 2–6 and A for ages 8–10, and the pattern adds: “in the grey sweater, the rib is worked in col B”. So for the grey version the rib, front bands and cuffs are rust heather in every size, as in the photos. For the black version, the photos show black rib, and there is only one ball of brick heather, which is for the lines — so knit the rib, bands and cuffs in black in every size (our reading).
How are the diamonds knitted?
The lines and diamonds on the upper back and fronts (charts 2 and 3) are intarsia, as the pattern says: each colour area has its own length of yarn, twisted round the next colour where they meet, with nothing carried across the back. The note at the start says only that the pattern is worked in intarsia, and the step for chart 1, the 9-row border of crosses, names no technique; it repeats across the whole row, so it can be stranded (our note). All sizes start the charts on row 1; each size has its own start and end lines at the edges of the charts and its own outline for the armholes, neck and shoulders — follow the lines for your size.
Anything to watch for in the pattern?
A few small things. White is printed as a second letter A in the materials list; in the chart key it is D. The chart heading “front (8-4 yrs)” means ages 8–10. The left front’s neck decreases are written “k2tog tbl” in the text and ssk in the chart key; both lean the same way. The sleeve cuffs are cast on with 4.5 mm needles, though the rib on the back and fronts uses 4 mm. And at the back of the neck, the pattern binds off the two band ends and then says to graft them — bound-off stitches can’t be grafted, so sew the two ends together at the centre back instead, or leave the stitches live and graft them (our tip).
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
Only the two cardigans — the grey version on the toddler, the black version on the older boy. The white shirt, the white polo neck, the jeans, the black trousers, the shoes and the glasses are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo, a page with a small photo, the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge and all the instructions, two pages with the back charts — ages 2–6 and ages 8–10, printed sideways, each with the colour key — a page with the front charts for both age groups, and Ístex’s back cover.
