Good to know

Norður — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, for ages 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10: 36 to 52 cm long to the shoulder, 24 to 35 cm to the underarm, and sleeves of 24 to 40 cm. The pattern prints a chest of 58 (66, 72, 78, 82) cm, but that does not match its own stitch counts: the back and fronts come to about 71 (73, 84, 93, 97) cm round the chest, buttoned (our calculation from the stitches and the gauge). We think the printed chest is wrong, so go by our figures — and note that ages 2 and 4 are almost the same width.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for ages 8 and 10: 8 balls of black and one each of brick heather, crimson red and white — 11 balls. Age 2 uses 7 balls, age 4 uses 8 and age 6 uses 9.
Which colour is the rib?
Black, in every size (our reading). The cast-on lines say colour B for ages 2–6 and A for 8–10, and the pattern only settles it for the grey version. The black cardigan in the photo has black rib, and the single ball of brick heather is meant for the lines, not the rib — so knit the rib, bands and cuffs in black.
Is it hard to knit?
It is knitted flat in pieces and sewn together. The lines and diamonds on the upper back and fronts are intarsia: each colour area has its own length of yarn, twisted round the next at each colour change, with nothing carried across the back. The 9-row border of crosses repeats across the whole row, so most knitters strand that part (our note). All sizes start the charts on row 1; each size has its own start and end lines at the edges of the charts and its own outline for the armholes, neck and shoulders — follow the lines for your size.
Anything to watch for in the pattern?
White is printed as letter A in the materials list; in the chart key it is D. The chart heading “front (8-4 yrs)” means ages 8–10. And at the back of the neck, the pattern binds off the two band ends and then says to graft them — bound-off stitches can’t be grafted, so sew the two ends together at the centre back instead, or leave the stitches live and graft them (our tip).
Which child in the photos wears this version?
The older boy in the black cardigan. The toddler wears the grey version, also sold as a kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4 mm (US 6) and 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 80 cm, used back and forth; 4.5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern’s materials list also names 40 cm circulars and 4 mm double-pointed needles, but no step in the instructions uses them — even the sleeve cuffs are cast on with 4.5 mm — so they are not in the kit. Buttons are not included.
