Icelandic wool blanket in a living room

Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • From a Reykjavík bindrune studioAlrún began with bindrune jewellery, founded by Jón Bjarni Baldursson in Reykjavík. The minis put the same Strength sign on a baby blanket.
  • A sign with a historyAlrún says bindrunes were once used to cast spells, conceal secrets and make personal amulets. Here one sign is repeated, layered and mirrored until it reads as a pattern.
  • A gift that says somethingAlrún suggests the Strength sign for someone you want to wish strength. For a newborn, that is the whole wish.
  • Natural fibres onlyNew Zealand wool and cotton, nothing synthetic, OEKO-TEX certified.

Questions people ask before they buy

What does the pattern mean?
Magn is Icelandic for strength; it can also mean magnitude or intensity. Alrún ties the runes of the word into one sign, a bindrune, and reads it as empowerment and resilience. “Wrap your little one up in strength” is how Alrún puts it.
Why wool and cotton?
Alrún's full-size blankets are all wool. For the minis it adds 12% cotton so the cloth is gentler against a baby's skin, while the wool still does the warming. OEKO-TEX is an independent textile label that tests for harmful substances.
Is the pattern on both sides?
Yes. It is woven as a jacquard, so the dark grey and white yarns make the figures themselves, and the back is the same pattern with the colours swapped. There is no wrong side to hide.
How big is 90 × 130 cm?
About 35 × 51 inches. Alrún's full-size Strength blanket is 130 × 180 cm, so the mini is about half the cloth with the same sign on it.
