Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • A Reykjavík design brandAlrún is a small, independent brand in Reykjavík founded by Jón Bjarni Baldursson, known first for its bindrune jewellery. The blankets carry the same signs onto wool.
  • Signs with a historyAlrún says bindrunes were once used to cast spells, conceal secrets and make personal amulets. On this blanket the Strength sign is repeated, layered and mirrored until it reads as a pattern, so the message is there without shouting.
  • Wool chosen for the weaveNew Zealand wool, OEKO-TEX certified, woven as a heavy-weight jacquard: warm, breathable and water-repellent, in Alrún's words, and dense enough to hold a sharp two-colour figure.
  • A gift with the meaning built inAlrún suggests the Strength sign for someone you want to wish strength: a new start, a hard year, a big move. A blanket says it every evening.

Questions people ask before they buy

What does “Strength” mean here?
Magn is the Icelandic word for strength; it can also mean magnitude or intensity. Alrún binds the four runes of the word into one sign — a bindrune — and reads it as empowerment and resilience: inner strength for whatever you are up against. That one sign is the building block of the whole pattern.
Is the pattern printed on?
No. It is woven in as a jacquard, so the dark grey and white yarns themselves make the figures. That is also why the back is the pattern in reverse, white figures on dark grey, and either side can face up.
How big is it?
130 × 180 cm, about 51 × 71 inches. That is a large throw: two people on a sofa, or across the foot of a double bed. It is not a full bedspread.
What is the wool like?
Alrún weaves it as a heavy-weight jacquard, so it has more body in the hand than a loose, airy throw and lies flat where you put it. New Zealand wool is smooth rather than hairy, and Alrún describes the cloth as warm, breathable and naturally water-repellent.
