The photo is marked 5 and 6. The woman’s dark trousers and brown boots and the girl’s jeans and shoes are not part of the pattern

Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 5 & 6 — your questions, answered

What are No. 5 and No. 6?
Two sweaters by Anna Árnadóttir printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials, sizes, instructions, charts and key. No. 5 (pages 2 and 3) is for adults, XS to XL, white with dark gray and oatmeal. No. 6 (pages 4 and 5) is for children, to fit 110, 122, 140 and 152 cm tall, oatmeal with black heather and white. By our reading of the charts their yokes and borders are laid out the same way; the children’s yoke chart is shorter, 35 rounds against 43. In the cover photo the woman wears No. 5 and the girl No. 6. Our Snædís kit is for No. 5; there is no kit for No. 6.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes — every colour in both sweaters is still made by Ístex: white (0051), dark gray (0058) and oatmeal (0085) for No. 5, and oatmeal (0085), black heather (0005) and white (0051) for No. 6. The leaflet prints these names next to the numbers; our shop calls 0058 dark grey heather and 0085 oatmeal heather, so go by the numbers.
Which size should I knit?
No. 5 has five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the centre front neck; sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. No. 6 is sized by height — 110, 122, 140 and 152 cm; there is no 134 — with a chest of 80, 86, 92 and 98 cm, a length of 42 to 58 cm and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm. In both, the body’s stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. No. 5: white 6 (6, 7, 7, 8), dark gray 2 (3, 3, 3, 3) and oatmeal 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) — 9 (11, 12, 12, 13) balls; one set of amounts for both sleeve lengths. No. 6: oatmeal 3 (4, 5, 5), black heather 1 (1, 2, 2) and white 1 in every size — 5 (6, 8, 8) balls.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. No. 5’s sleeves change to the 6 mm needle with only 40 to 48 stitches — too few for the 40 cm circular in its list — so you will need 6 mm double-pointed needles, which No. 5’s list leaves out (our reading); No. 6’s list has them. No. 6’s yoke instructions run on from page 4 to page 5. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are. The woman’s dark trousers and brown lace-up boots and the girl’s jeans and brown shoes are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both sweaters; No. 5’s page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and all its instructions; a page with No. 5’s two charts and key; No. 6’s page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, most of its instructions, its two charts and key; a page with the rest of No. 6’s yoke, the neckband and making up; and Ístex’s back cover.
