Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 41 — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The pattern gives one yarn amount for both sleeve lengths.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 7 balls of white, 3 of ash heather and 2 of black heather — 12 balls. XS uses 5 balls of white (10 in all), S and M 6 (11), and L 7 (12), like XL.
The pattern says “light gray” — which ball is that?
Colour A, 0056 — called Ash Heather in our shop. Black heather (0005) and white (0051) have the same names in the shop. Go by the colour number.
The yoke chart has other colour names beside it — which do I use?
None of them. The leaflet holds two designs that share the yoke chart, and the colour names printed beside it (9718 vanilla, 9719 field, 9720 straw, 9024 old rose, 9215 mauve and 9367 fawn) belong to Design 40, the woman’s sweater. For Design 41 use “Key, Design 41”, printed beside Chart 1 on page 4: the empty squares and the open circles are white, the filled dots black heather, and every dotted (:) square light gray — ash heather in this kit.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. Start Chart 1 where it marks your size (“begin body”) or “begin sleeve”. In sizes XS, M and L the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the totals are right, so knit it as written. By our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to about 4 cm less than the printed length to the front neck (about 58 cm against 62 cm in XS). The folded neckband (8 cm, folded in half) adds about 4 cm at the front neck, so the printed length may include it; the pattern does not say. The body is knitted to a set length — 38 to 44 cm — before the yoke, so if you want to change the length, do it there.
Which photo shows this version?
The man on the right — Design 41, in the colours of this kit. The woman on the left wears Design 40 from the same leaflet, a grey sweater with a pastel yoke, which is not available as a kit. The jeans and trousers in the photo are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles.
