Why you'll love it

  • One yoke, two looksThe same 43-round chart of spikes, zigzags and small diamonds — black sheep over bands of colour on fawn, or black heather and white on light gray.
  • Rolled edgesNo. 40 has no rib: the hem and cuffs are plain stocking stitch that rolls up, and a 7 cm rib collar stands up at the neck.
  • Zigzag bordersNo. 41 has a 10-round black heather zigzag border above the light gray ribs at the hem and cuffs.
  • Bands of colourIn No. 40 the stitches between the black sheep motifs change colour up the yoke — vanilla, field, straw, old rose, mauve, fawn and vanilla.
  • For women and menNo. 41 has sleeve lengths for women (41–45 cm) and for men (46–50 cm); No. 40 has one, 37–40 cm.

Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 40 & 41 — your questions, answered

What are No. 40 and No. 41?
Two different round-yoke sweaters by Jóhanna Hjaltadóttir, printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials, sizes and instructions; they share the yoke chart. No. 40, adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir, is fawn with rolled edges and a stand-up rib collar, in sizes XS to L with one sleeve length per size; in the photo a woman wears it. No. 41 is white with light gray ribs, a black heather zigzag border above them and a folded neckband, in sizes XS to XL with sleeve lengths for women and for men; in the photo a man wears it. Both are Álafosslopi on 6 mm needles.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
For No. 41, yes — white (0051), light gray (0056) and black heather (0005) are all still made by Ístex. Our shop calls 0056 ash heather, so go by the colour number. For No. 40, only black sheep (0052) is still made; our shop calls it black sheep heather. Fawn (9367), vanilla (9718), field (9719), straw (9720), old rose (9024) and mauve (9215) are no longer made, and there is no kit for No. 40. In the photo the fawn looks mid grey.
Which size should I knit?
Both have a chest of 98, 105, 111 and 117 cm in XS to L, and No. 41 also 123 cm in XL, with a length of 62, 65, 68 and 70 cm to the centre front neck (72 cm in XL). No. 40’s sleeves are 37, 39, 39 and 40 cm to the underarm; No. 41’s are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The bodies have 128 (136, 144, 152, 160) stitches, which come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. No. 40’s body and sleeves are knitted 2 cm longer than the table says, because about 2 cm rolls up at the lower edge.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. No. 40: fawn (9367) 6 (6, 7, 7), black sheep (0052) 2, and 1 ball each of vanilla, field, straw, old rose and mauve — 13 balls in XS and S, 14 in M and L. No. 41: white (0051) 5 (6, 6, 7, 7), light gray (0056) 3 and black heather (0005) 2 — 10 balls in XS, 11 in S and M, 12 in L and XL; one amount for both sleeve lengths.
The yoke chart has colour names beside it — which do I use?
For No. 40, use them: the dotted (:) squares change colour in bands up the yoke — vanilla, field, straw, old rose, mauve, fawn and vanilla again — as printed beside the chart, and in No. 40’s key the filled dots and the open circles are both black sheep. For No. 41, ignore them: the chart printed with No. 41, on page 5, is a copy of page 3 and still carries No. 40’s band names. Use “Key, Design 41”, printed beside chart 1 on page 4: the empty squares and the open circles are white, the filled dots black heather and every dotted square light gray.
How are No. 40’s colour changes made?
The key says to change colour at random — not always at the beginning of the round — and the pattern says to splice the two yarns together: split the last 10–25 cm of each end, cut one strand of each, overlap the remaining strands and twist them lightly together.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. No. 40’s page prints chart 1 with a key, but No. 40’s instructions never use it — its body and sleeves are plain, with no border, as in the photo; chart 1 is No. 41’s border (our reading). No. 40 also refers to “Chart 2 on page 57” and both to “Read Tension on page 3” — by our reading, pages of the Lopi 18 book. In this leaflet the yoke chart is on pages 3 and 5, and the tension is the one printed, 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. For No. 41, start chart 1 where it marks your size (“begin body”) or “begin sleeve”. When the yoke is joined, in XS, M and L the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back; the totals are right, so knit it as written. By our calculation from the row gauge, No. 41’s body and yoke come to about 4 cm less than the printed length to the front neck; the folded neckband (8 cm, folded in half) adds about 4 cm, so the printed length may include it — the pattern does not say. No. 41’s needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them; No. 40’s list has them. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are, in their original colours: the woman on the left wears No. 40, and the man on the right wears No. 41 (the leaflet’s cover prints the numbers beside them). The trousers and jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both sweaters, a page with a small photo of No. 40, its materials, sizes, tension, all its instructions and chart 1 with No. 40’s key, a page with the yoke chart and No. 40’s band colours, a page with a small photo of No. 41, its materials, sizes, tension, all its instructions and chart 1 with No. 41’s key, a page with the yoke chart again, and Ístex’s back cover.
