Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 4 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Light grey tweed (9451) is no longer made by Ístex. This kit has light grey tweed (9974) in its place — today’s yarn of the same kind: a pale grey with small dark flecks, as in the photo, but a little lighter, nearer off-white. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves and the grey in the yoke. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 103 to 121 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The buttonholes go on the right front for women and on the left front for men.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 7 balls of light grey tweed, 4 of black heather and 2 of white — 13 balls. XS and S use 5 of grey and 3 of black heather. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the boy’s cardigan in the photo included?
Its pattern is in the same leaflet — No. 3, for children — but this kit has the yarn for the adult No. 4 only. No. 3 is sold as a separate kit. The T-shirt and jeans are not part of the pattern.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them once the button band is knitted, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Anything to watch for?
The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. At the underarms the body puts one stitch more on the holder than each sleeve, in every size (10 against 9 in size XS), so you graft one stitch more on the body side. And the neckband count of 69 (69 71 73 75) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation).
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 to 48 stitches — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Buttons are not included.
