Lopi 18 No. 31 — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
Scarlet (0078), apple green (9212) and goldenrod (9213) are no longer made in Álafosslopi. These are the same three replacements as in our Austri kit, which is a different cardigan, for adults. Happy red (0047) takes the place of scarlet. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves and the red in the yoke and borders. It is a red of the same hue, but clearly darker than the bright scarlet in the sunlit photo. Apple green (9983) takes the place of the old apple green. It is colour B, the open circles: the green diamonds and the small green stitches in the yoke. It is the same kind of green, a little darker and more yellow than in the sunlit photo. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of goldenrod. It is colour C, the small dots: the flower centres in the borders and the gold centres and dots in the yoke. It is a deeper, mustard gold — clearly darker and warmer than the bright yellow in the photo, so those small dots will read warmer and darker. Navy (0118) is still made and is the navy in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 79 to 97 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The buttonholes go on the right front for a girl and on the left front for a boy.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 152 cm size: 5 balls of happy red, 3 of navy, 1 of apple green and 1 of golden heather — 10 balls. The 110 and 122 cm sizes use 3 of red and 2 of navy (7 balls in all), the 134 and 140 cm sizes 4 of red and 3 of navy (9).
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them once the button band is knitted, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Anything to watch for?
The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. At the underarms, in the 134, 140 and 152 cm sizes each sleeve puts one stitch more on the holder than the body (11 against 10 in size 134), so you graft one stitch more on the sleeve side; ease it in (our suggestion). The neckband count of 63 (63 63 63 67) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation).
Is the red polo neck in the photo part of the pattern?
No — it is worn under the cardigan, and the jeans are not part of the pattern either. The cardigan has a short navy neckband with small red flowers, folded to the inside, with the top button in it.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves and the top of the yoke. Buttons are not included.
