Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 31 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only navy (0118) is still made in Álafosslopi. Scarlet (0078), the main colour, is no longer made in Álafosslopi, and apple green (9212) and goldenrod (9213) are no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 0047 happy red for scarlet — a red of the same hue, but clearly darker than the bright scarlet in the sunlit photo; 9983 apple green for the old apple green — the same kind of green, a little darker and more yellow than in the sunlit photo; and 9964 golden heather for goldenrod — a deeper, mustard gold, clearly darker and warmer than the bright yellow in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 79, 85, 91, 94 and 97 cm, 42, 46, 50, 54 and 58 cm long to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 25, 29, 33, 35 and 38 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The body is knitted 25 (28, 30, 33, 36) cm to the underarm. Its 99 to 123 stitches, leaving out the 2 purl stitches at the cut, come to about 76 to 95 cm at the pattern’s gauge before a front band is added (our check), so the chest is the buttoned cardigan’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: scarlet (0078) 3 (3, 4, 4, 5), navy (0118) 2 (2, 3, 3, 3), apple green (9212) 1 and goldenrod (9213) 1 — 7 balls for 110 and 122 cm, 9 for 134 and 140 cm, 10 for 152 cm.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. The body and yoke are knitted in the round with a purl stitch at each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each purl stitch, knit the button band, and only then cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, knitting the first and last stitch of every body and yoke row — then there is nothing to cut.
Is it for a girl or a boy?
Either. For a girl the buttonholes go on the right front, for a boy on the left; nothing else changes. The cardigan uses 5 (6, 6, 6, 6) buttons, which are not included; the pattern gives no size. The first buttonhole is in the welt and the last in the neckband, 1.5 cm above the top of the band.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. At the underarms, in the 134, 140 and 152 cm sizes each sleeve puts one stitch more on the holder than the body (11 against 10 in size 134), so you graft one stitch more on the sleeve side; ease it in (our suggestion). The neckband count of 63 (63, 63, 63, 67) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. The red polo neck under it and the jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and most of the instructions, a page with the end of the buttonhole band, the neckband, the three charts and the key, and Ístex’s back cover.
