Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 30 — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Monet (9735) and copper (9384) are no longer made by Ístex. This kit has blue tweed (1234) in place of monet — the main colour (M): the body, the sleeves, all the rib, the neckband and the blue background of the charts. It is the nearest mid-blue Álafosslopi, a shade greyer, and its tweed flecks are white, where monet shows small red, orange and yellow flecks. It is the same replacement as in our blue Tíglar kit. Amber heather (9971) is in place of copper — colour C, used in small amounts: a few stitches in the border above the hem and cuffs, the centres of the diamonds and the small crosses in the yoke. It is a rust-orange heather, clearly darker and rustier than the bright orange in the sunlit photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78 to 97 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 152 cm size: 5 balls of blue tweed, 2 of navy, 1 of light denim heather and 1 of amber heather — 9 balls. The 110 cm size uses 3 balls of blue tweed and 1 of navy (6 balls in all), the 122 and 134 cm sizes 4 of blue tweed and 1 of navy (7), and the 140 cm size 5 of blue tweed and 1 of navy (8).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. On the sleeves, “inc 1 st at beg and end of 2nd rnd and thereafter every 6th rnd 3 (4) 5 (6) 4 times” means the first increase round plus 3 (4) 5 (6) 4 more; that gives the printed 44 (46) 48 (50) 52 stitches. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder but the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion). “Double popinted needles” in the sleeve instructions is a typo for double-pointed. Several rounds use three colours at once — navy and light denim together with either the amber or the blue tweed. And by our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to 2 to 3 cm less than the printed length to the front neck; the body is knitted to a set length before the yoke (25 to 36 cm), so check the length there.
Is the orange collar in the photo part of the pattern?
No — it looks like the collar of a top worn under the sweater. The sweater has a folded blue crew neckband. The jeans are not part of the pattern either.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The sleeves and the top of the yoke are knitted on the 6 mm double-pointed needles.
