Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 30 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the four: navy (0118) and light denim heather (0008) are still made by Ístex. Monet (9735), the main colour, and copper (9384) are no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 1234 blue tweed for monet — the nearest mid-blue Álafosslopi, a shade greyer, with white tweed flecks where monet shows small red, orange and yellow ones — and 9971 amber heather for copper, a rust-orange heather, clearly darker and rustier than the bright orange in the sunlit photo.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78, 83, 88, 92 and 97 cm, 42, 46, 50, 54 and 58 cm long to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 25, 29, 33, 35 and 38 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The body’s 102 to 126 stitches come to 78 to 97 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: M monet (9735) 3 (4, 4, 5, 5), A navy (0118) 1 (1, 1, 1, 2), B light denim heather (0008) 1 and C copper (9384) 1 in every size — 6 balls for 110 cm, 7 for 122 and 134 cm, 8 for 140 cm and 9 for 152 cm.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. On the sleeves, “inc 1 st at beg and end of 2nd rnd and thereafter every 6th rnd 3(4:5:6:4)times” means the first increase round plus 3 (4, 5, 6, 4) more; that gives the printed 44 (46, 48, 50, 52) stitches (our reading). In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder but the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion). The sleeve instructions print “double popinted needles” — a typo for double-pointed. Several rounds use three colours at once — navy and light denim together with either the copper or the main blue. By our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to 2 to 3 cm less than the printed length to the front neck; the body is knitted to a set length before the yoke, 25 (28, 30, 33, 36) cm, so check the length there. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is the orange collar in the photo part of the pattern?
No — it looks like the collar of a top worn under the sweater. The pattern knits the neckband in the main blue and folds it double. The jeans are not part of the pattern either.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, all the instructions, both charts and the key, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
