Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 3 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Light grey tweed (9451) is no longer made by Ístex. This kit has light grey tweed (9974) in its place — today’s yarn of the same kind: a pale grey with small dark flecks, as in the photo, but a little lighter, nearer off-white. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves and the grey in the yoke. No. 3’s materials list calls it just “light gray”; the chart key says light gray tweed — the same yarn. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 80 to 99 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 152 cm size: 4 balls of light grey tweed, 3 of black heather and 2 of white — 9 balls. The 110 and 122 cm sizes use 3 of grey, 2 of black heather and 1 of white.
Is the man’s cardigan in the photo included?
Its pattern is in the same leaflet — No. 4, for adults — but this kit has the yarn for the children’s No. 3 only. No. 4 is sold as a separate kit. The boy’s hoodie and jeans are not part of the pattern.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them once the button band is knitted, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Anything to watch for?
No. 3’s charts have no “begin” labels. By the stitch counts, knit the body and yoke rounds across the whole chart from the right-hand edge, and the sleeves in whole repeats (our calculation) — the same start points as No. 4’s matching charts on page 5, which start the sleeves at the 3rd stitch of the repeat, counted from the right. The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8. And the neckband count works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation).
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves and the top of the yoke. Buttons are not included.
