Lopi 18 No. 26 — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, XS, S and M, with a chest of 100, 106 and 112 cm and a length of 60 to 66 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 43 cm for women and 46 to 48 cm for men. There is no larger size, so compare the chest with a cardigan that fits you the way you like.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size M: 10 balls of midnight blue, 2 of white and 1 of denim heather — 13 balls. XS and S use 9 balls of midnight blue (12 balls in all). The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths, and the hood cord is braided from the midnight blue and denim heather in the kit. The pattern calls 0010 “dark denim heather”; in our shop it is Denim Heather.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes, as the pattern is written. The body and yoke are knitted in the round with 2 purl stitches at the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each purl stitch, knit the button band, and only then cut between the purl stitches. The pattern refers to an illustration of this on page 3 that is not in the leaflet; the text describes every step without it. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth in rows instead, with a garter-stitch edge stitch at each side — then there is nothing to cut.
How does it fasten?
With 6 buttons. The first buttonhole is knitted into the welt, the last into the neckband, and the other four into the buttonhole band, which is knitted to match the button band. For women the buttons go on the left front, for men on the right. Each band has a 3-stitch facing in stocking stitch that folds over the cut edge and is sewn down inside. The buttons are not included, and the pattern gives no size.
How are the pockets and the hood made?
Pockets: at 12 (12) 13 cm the centre-front stitches are knitted back and forth, decreasing at both edges for 16 rows, which makes two slanting openings; the linings are knitted in behind them, and a 5-row rib border is picked up along each opening at the end. Hood: knitted up from the neckband on 6 mm, back and forth in stocking stitch, 25 cm high, and shaped at the top like a sock heel. Each front edge, 5 stitches wide, is folded inside and sewn down, and the cord is drawn through it; an eyelet at each side of the neck lets the cord out (our reading). In the photo the cord ends in small tassels; the pattern doesn’t mention them — knot the ends or add tassels from leftover yarn (our suggestion).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. In the pocket instructions a stray bracket has crept in — “K(26(27:29) across left front” means K26 (27:29). At the start of the hood the pattern says “work edge sts as set”; by our reading you simply knit the next row as written, across all 69 neckband stitches, and the 4 stitches cast on at each side become part of the folded front edge. The neckband count of 69 stitches comes right if you leave out the 2 purl stitches at the cut edge (our calculation). And the smaller sizes skip rounds 1 and 36 of the yoke chart, size XS also round 28, as marked beside the chart.
Which photo shows this version?
The young woman on the left, in the midnight blue cardigan with the hood down at the back — this is Design 26, in the colours of this kit. The young man on the right wears Design 27 from the same leaflet, a green pullover, sold as a separate kit (Lopi 18 No. 27) with three colours replaced. The jeans and the white top are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 38 or 40 stitches — about 29 to 31 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Buttons are not included.
