Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 26 & 27 — your questions, answered

What are No. 26 and No. 27?
Two different garments by Ragnheiður Matthíasdóttir, printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials, sizes, instructions and charts. No. 26, adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir, is a hooded, buttoned cardigan with two pockets, in midnight blue with white and dark denim heather. No. 27 is a crew-neck pullover in loden green with ash and golden green. Both are knitted in Álafosslopi on 6 mm needles, in sizes XS, S and M, with sleeve lengths for women and for men. In the photo a young woman wears No. 26 and a young man No. 27.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
For No. 26, yes — midnight blue (0709), white (0051) and dark denim heather (0010) are all still made by Ístex; our shop calls 0010 denim heather, so go by the colour numbers. For No. 27, no — loden green (9239), ash (9364) and golden green (9240) are all no longer made. Our green No. 27 kit uses 1231 garden green for loden green — a clear leaf green, lighter and brighter than the deep moss green in the photo and noticeably less yellow; 0054 light ash heather for ash — very close to the pale grey in the photo; and 1230 highland green for golden green — a brown-olive heather, clearly browner than the olive green in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, XS, S and M. No. 26 has a chest of 100, 106 and 112 cm, No. 27 a chest of 98, 105 and 111 cm. Both are 60, 63 and 66 cm long to the centre front neck, with sleeves of 41, 43 and 43 cm to the underarm for women and 46, 48 and 48 cm for men, and both bodies are knitted 36 (38, 40) cm to the underarm. No. 27’s 128 (136, 144) body stitches come to its printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round; No. 26 has the same body stitches, leaving out the 2 purl stitches at the cut, plus a front band. There is no larger size, so compare the chest with a sweater or cardigan that fits you the way you like.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. No. 26: midnight blue (0709) 9 (9, 10), white (0051) 2 and dark denim heather (0010) 1 — 12 balls in XS and S, 13 in M; the hood cord is braided from the midnight blue and dark denim heather. No. 27: loden green (9239) 5 (6, 6), ash (9364) 2 (3, 3) and golden green (9240) 1 — 8 balls in XS, 10 in S and M. Each pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Do I have to cut No. 26?
Yes, as the pattern is written. The body and yoke are knitted in the round with 2 purl stitches at the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each purl stitch, knit the button band, and only then cut between the purl stitches, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth in rows instead, with a garter-stitch edge stitch at each side — then there is nothing to cut. No. 27 is a pullover and is not cut.
How does No. 26 fasten?
With 6 buttons, which are not included; the pattern gives no size. The first buttonhole is knitted into the welt, the last into the neckband, 2 cm above the top of the band, and the other four into the buttonhole band. For women the buttons go on the left front, for men on the right. Each band has a 3-stitch facing in stocking stitch that folds over the cut edge and is sewn down inside.
How are No. 26’s pockets and hood made?
Pockets: at 12 (12, 13) cm the centre-front stitches are knitted back and forth, decreasing at both edges for 16 rows, which makes two slanting openings; the linings, knitted first, are knitted in behind them, and a 5-row rib border is picked up along each opening at the end. Hood: knitted up from the neckband on 6 mm, back and forth in stocking stitch, 25 cm high, and shaped at the top like a sock heel. Each front edge, 5 stitches wide, is folded inside and sewn down, and the 100 cm cord is drawn through it; an eyelet at each side of the neck lets the cord out (our reading). In the photo the cord ends in small tassels; the pattern doesn’t mention them.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. No. 26: the pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the leaflet; the text describes every step without it. In the pocket instructions a stray bracket has crept in — “K(26(27:29) across left front” means K26 (27:29). At the start of the hood the pattern says “work edge sts as set”; by our reading you simply knit the next row as written, across all 69 neckband stitches, and the 4 stitches cast on at each side become part of the folded front edge. The neckband count of 69 stitches comes right if you leave out the 2 purl stitches at the cut (our calculation). No. 27: start both charts where they mark your size; chart 1 has its own start for the body and for the sleeves. In size S the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined (58 and 60); the total is right, so knit it as written. On the sleeves, increase on round 2 and then 5 (6, 7) more times, every 8th round for women or every 9th for men, to reach 52 (54, 56) stitches. Both: the smaller sizes skip rounds 1 and 36 of the yoke chart, size XS also round 28, as marked beside the chart. The needle lists have no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 38 or 40 stitches — about 29 to 31 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan and the pullover are. The young woman on the left wears No. 26 with the hood down at the back; her jeans and white top are not part of the pattern, and nor are the small tassels on the cord. The young man on the right wears No. 27 in its original loden green, ash and golden green; his dark trousers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both garments, a page with a small photo of No. 26, its materials, sizes, tension and instructions up to the yoke, a page with its finishing, front bands, neckband, hood, pocket borders, chart and key, a page with a small photo of No. 27, its materials, sizes, tension, body, sleeves and both its charts with the key, a page with No. 27’s yoke, neckband and finishing, and Ístex’s back cover.
