Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 24 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Steel blue (9300), the main colour, is no longer made in Álafosslopi. Denim heather (0010) takes its place. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the rib, body, sleeves, yoke background and neckband — 5 of the 8 balls. It is a heathered mid blue, brighter and bluer — less grey — than the muted slate blue in the photo. If you would like it closer to the photo’s grey-blue, indigo (9959) is a darker, greyer blue. White (0051) and light grey (0056, sold as ash heather) are still made and are the white and grey in the pattern. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78 to 97 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 152 cm size: 5 balls of denim heather, 2 of white and 1 of ash heather — 8 balls. The 110 cm size uses 3 balls of denim heather and 1 of white (5 balls in all), the 122 and 134 cm sizes 4 and 1 (6), and the 140 cm size the same as the 152 cm size.
The leaflet has two sweaters — which one is this kit?
Design 24, the blue sweater. The leaflet also has Design 25, a white sweater with a violet and dusty rose yoke embroidered with small yellow flowers and green knots, with moss-stitch edges and a single collar. Design 25 is not sold as a kit: four of its five colours are no longer made, and there is no close match today for its dusty rose. The two share the yoke chart; read the key and instructions marked Design 24. (Design 25’s page refers to “Chart 2 on page 33” — a page number from the Lopi 18 book; it means the chart printed with it.)
Anything to watch for?
Two small things. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion). The body instructions have a typo, “using 4½ mm twin pin and and M” — it means “and M”.
Which child in the photo wears this sweater?
The boy on the left — knitted in the original steel blue, with the white and grey yoke and borders. The top under his neckband and the jeans are not part of the pattern. The girl beside him wears Design 25 from the same leaflet, which is not sold as a kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves and the top of the yoke. Stitch holders and a tapestry needle are not included.
