Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 24 & 25 — your questions, answered

What are No. 24 and No. 25?
Two different children’s sweaters by Ásdís Hallgrímsdóttir, printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials, sizes, instructions and key. They share the yoke chart, the five sizes and the tension; Design 25 is 2 cm longer in the body and 2 cm shorter in the sleeve. Design 24 is steel blue with white and light gray: K1, P1 rib, a border above the hem and cuffs, and a folded neckband. Design 25, adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir, is white with mauve and old rose, embroidered with straw and field: moss-stitch edges, no border and a single rib collar. In the photo the boy wears Design 24 and the girl Design 25. Design 25 is not sold as a kit: four of its five colours are no longer made, and there is no close match today for its old rose.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
For Design 24, white (0051) and light gray (0056) are still made by Ístex — our shop calls 0056 ash heather. Steel blue (9300), the main colour, is no longer made. Our blue No. 24 kit uses 0010 denim heather in its place: a heathered mid blue, brighter and bluer — less grey — than the muted slate blue in the photo. If you would like it closer to the photo’s grey-blue, indigo (9959) is a darker, greyer blue. For Design 25, only the white (0051) is still made; mauve (9215), old rose (9024), straw (9720) and field (9719) are no longer made, and there is no kit for Design 25.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78, 83, 88, 92 and 97 cm in both designs. Design 24 is 42 to 58 cm long to the centre front neck, with sleeves of 25 to 38 cm; Design 25 is 44 to 60 cm long, with sleeves of 23 to 36 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The body’s 102 to 126 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Design 24: steel blue 3 (4, 4, 5, 5), white 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) and light gray 1 in every size — 5 (6, 6, 8, 8) balls. Design 25: white 4 (4, 5, 5, 6), mauve 1 and old rose 1 in every size — 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) balls — plus straw and field for the embroidery, for which the list gives no amount; only a little of each is needed (our estimate).
How is Design 25 embroidered?
After the knitting is done. With straw, work four lazy-daisy stitches over the white stitches of chart rounds 16 to 18 to make each small flower, with a French knot in field at its centre; then work French knots in field between the white stitches of rounds 14 and 20. The leaflet draws both stitches on page 5 and says to look at the photo.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together (our suggestion). Design 24’s body instructions have a typo, “using 4½ mm twin pin and and M” — it means “and M”. Design 25’s page prints the border chart too, but its instructions never use it and the photo shows no border, so leave it out for Design 25 (our reading). Design 25 says “Chart 2 on page 33” — a page number from the Lopi 18 book; the leaflet prints the chart on the same page. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are. The boy’s light blue shirt collar, the girl’s hair tie and their jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both sweaters; Design 24’s page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, body, sleeves, both charts and its key; a page with its yoke, neckband and making up; Design 25’s page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, body, the start of the sleeves, both charts and its key; a page with the rest of Design 25’s instructions, the embroidery and drawings of the two stitches; and Ístex’s back cover.
