Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 20 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Medium brown tweed (9453) is no longer made by Ístex. This kit has acorn heather (0053) in its place — the main colour (M): the body, the sleeves, the ribs, the knitted lines of the yoke, and one of the two strands in the purled cells and the collar. Acorn heather is a close match for the warm mid-brown of 9453 (we compared it with a well-lit photo of the same yarn in another Lopi 18 pattern), but a plain heather: the small white tweed flecks in the photo will not be there. This photo was taken in dull light, so the brown looks darker in it than it will knit up. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Two sizes only, M and L, with a chest of 113 and 125 cm and a length of 63 and 67 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 42 or 44 cm for women and 47 or 49 cm for men. There is no smaller or larger size, so compare the chest with a sweater that fits you the way you like.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size L: 9 balls of acorn heather Álafosslopi and 2 balls of white Léttlopi. Size M uses 7 balls of acorn heather and the same 2 of white. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
How does the textured yoke work?
There is no stranded colourwork. On the empty squares of the chart you purl with two strands at once — one of acorn heather Álafosslopi and one of white Léttlopi — and on the dot squares you knit with acorn heather alone. The purled two-strand stitches stand out as raised brown-and-white cells. The pattern does not say what to do with the Léttlopi strand over the knit stitches; carry it loosely along the back (our suggestion).
Which photo shows this version?
The young man on the left, marked 20 — the brown version, knitted in the original medium brown tweed. The boy on the right, marked 21, wears the grey version from the same leaflet, sold as a separate kit (Lopi 18 No. 21). The black trousers are not part of the pattern.
Anything to watch for?
At each underarm the sleeve puts 12 (13) stitches on the holder but the body only 11 (12), so there is one stitch more on the sleeve side when you graft; knit two of the sleeve stitches together or ease the extra one in (our suggestion). The collar is given as 13 rounds of rib, with no depth in cm. In the photo it stands a little higher on the boy (No. 21) than on the young man (No. 20); the instructions are the same for both.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 80 cm; 7 mm (US 10½) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 5 mm and 7 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 7 mm after the cuff with only 40 or 42 stitches — about 36 to 38 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 7 mm double-pointed needles.
