Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 20 & 21 — your questions, answered

What are No. 20 and No. 21?
Two numbers in Ístex’s Lopi 18 book for the same sweater in two colourways, printed in one leaflet as Design 20 and Design 21, with the same sizes, instructions, chart and amounts. Design 20 is brown: M 9453 medium brown tweed Álafosslopi with A 0051 white Léttlopi, which gives light marled cells on brown. Design 21 is grey: M 9451 light gray tweed Álafosslopi with A 0052 black sheep Léttlopi, which gives dark marled cells on light grey.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
The two Léttlopi colours, yes — white (0051) and black sheep (0052) are still made by Ístex; our shop calls 0052 black sheep heather. The two tweeds are no longer made. Our brown No. 20 kit uses 0053 acorn heather for medium brown tweed (9453) — a close warm mid-brown, but a plain heather, so the small white flecks in the photo will not be there. Our light grey No. 21 kit uses 9974 light grey tweed for light gray tweed (9451) — a light grey with small dark flecks, clearly paler than the sweater looks in this dull, overcast photo.
How does the textured yoke work?
There is no stranded colourwork. On the empty squares of the chart you purl with two strands at once — one of M, the Álafosslopi, and one of A, the Léttlopi — and on the dot squares you knit with M alone. The purled two-strand stitches stand out as raised, marled cells. The decreases are P2tog with both strands, except in the last round, where they are K2tog with M. The pattern does not say what to do with the Léttlopi strand over the knit stitches; carry it loosely along the back (our suggestion).
Which size should I knit?
Two sizes only, M and L, with a chest of 113 and 125 cm and a length of 63 and 67 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 42 or 44 cm to the underarm for women and 47 or 49 cm for men. The body’s 124 (138) stitches come to 113 (125) cm at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. There is no smaller or larger size, so compare the chest with a sweater that fits you the way you like, measured all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Both designs take the same. The main colour, Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: 7 for size M and 9 for size L. The second colour, Léttlopi in 50 g balls: 2 in either size. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths. Design 20: medium brown tweed (9453) and white (0051). Design 21: light gray tweed (9451) and black sheep (0052).
Anything to watch for?
At each underarm the sleeve puts 12 (13) stitches on the holder but the body only 11 (12), so there is one stitch more on the sleeve side when you graft; knit two of the sleeve stitches together or ease the extra one in (our suggestion). The collar is given as 13 rounds of rib, with no depth in cm; in the photo it stands a little higher on No. 21 than on No. 20, but the instructions are the same. The needle list has no 7 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 7 mm with only 40 or 42 stitches — about 36 to 38 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are — Design 20 on the young man on the left, marked 20, and Design 21 on the boy on the right, marked 21, who is pointing. The black trousers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of both designs, a page with a small photo, the materials for both designs, the sizes, the tension and all the instructions, a page with the chart and its key, and Ístex’s back cover.
