Lopi 18 No. 2 — your questions, answered

Why are nine colours different from the pattern?
Nine of the ten colours in this pattern are no longer made by Ístex; only the chocolate (0867) still is. So your sweater will look different from the photo in places. Here is each one. Cypress green heather (9966) takes the place of loden green (9239) — the main colour, M: the body, the sleeves, most of the ribs and neckband and the dark green in the yoke. It is a very dark green heather, a dark olive green like the body in the photo, but noticeably lighter than its near-black shade. Chartreuse green heather (9965) takes the place of two colours: golden green (9240), colour A — the big spikes at the foot of the yoke and the light stripes in the ribs and neckband — and straw (9720), colour F — the small bright points at the bottom of the khaki zigzag. For the spikes it is lighter and more yellow than in the photo, so they will stand out a little more; for the points it is very close. The kit has 2 balls of it. Highland green (1230) takes the place of field (9719), colour B — the olive zigzag inside the dark band above the spikes, the middle stripe of the ribs and the first rounds of the neckband — and putty (9241), colour G — the khaki zigzag in the upper yoke. It is a brownish khaki-olive, clearly darker and browner than the yellowish khaki of the putty in the photo. The kit has 2 balls of it. Dark grey heather (0058) takes the place of pond heather (9736), colour C — the dark slate band above the spikes and the dark top of the yoke at the neck. It is close to the dark slate grey in the photo. Chocolate heather (0867) takes the place of dark sienna (9118), colour D — the small dark red-brown points in the lower yoke. It is almost the same colour as in the photo, and it is also colour H, the chocolate band higher up, so the kit has 2 balls of it; in the photo the two already look much alike. Amber heather (9971) takes the place of rust (9392), colour E — the rust band in the middle of the yoke. It is a copper-orange heather, clearly lighter and more orange than the brick red in the photo. Grey heather (0057) takes the place of gray fleck (0042), colour I — the light grey band near the neck. It is a plain, neutral grey, a little darker, without the red and blue flecks you see in the photo, so that band will look plainer. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102 to 120 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The pattern gives one yarn amount for both sleeve lengths.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 8 balls of cypress green heather, 2 of chartreuse green heather, 2 of highland green, 1 of dark grey heather, 2 of chocolate heather, 1 of amber heather and 1 of grey heather — 17 balls. XS uses 5 balls of cypress green heather (14 in all), S and M 6 (15), and L 7 (16).
Which key do I use?
The one printed beside the chart on page 5, which starts with 9239 loden green. Page 4 also prints a key, under the materials list, but it belongs to Design 1 of the same leaflet (it starts with 9315 red brown) and its symbols mean other colours — ignore it. In this kit, read the page-5 key like this: 9239 = cypress green heather; 9240 and 9720 = chartreuse green heather; 9719 and 9241 = highland green; 9736 = dark grey heather; 9118 and 0867 = chocolate heather; 9392 = amber heather; 0042 = grey heather.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The man’s sleeve length for XS is printed “°46” — it means 46 cm. In every size the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined (57 and 59 in XS); the total is right, so knit it as written. The smaller sizes skip the yoke rounds marked beside the chart.
Which photo shows this version?
The young man on the left, in the dark green sweater — Design 2, knitted in the original colours. The woman on the right wears Design 1 from the same leaflet, a dark red-brown sweater with rolled edges, and its ear-flap hat; neither is available as a kit. The trousers and jeans are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 46 stitches — about 31 to 35 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles.
