A young man and a woman by a curved metal building, in the pattern’s original colours, most no longer made. He wears Design 2 — very dark green with light green spikes, a slate band, rust, a khaki zigzag, dark brown and flecked grey bands, and striped ribs. She wears Design 1 — dark red-brown with rolled edges, a yoke from light green spikes through blue, plum, rust and gold to wine red, and a tall neck not given in the leaflet — and the ear-flap hat. His trousers and her jeans are not part of the pattern

Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 1 & 2 — your questions, answered

What are No. 1 and No. 2?
Two different sweaters by Védís Jónsdóttir, printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials, sizes, instructions, chart and key, at the same tension. Design 1 is a women’s sweater in red brown with plain, rolled edges and one sleeve length per size, in sizes XS to L, and the leaflet adds an ear-flap hat in its colours. Design 2 is loden green with striped ribs and a folded, striped neckband, in sizes XS to XL, with sleeve lengths for women and for men. In the photo the woman wears Design 1 and the hat, and the young man wears Design 2.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only a few. In Design 1, dark denim (0010) and quiet purple (0163) are still made by Ístex — our shop calls them denim heather and dark soft purple. Red brown (9315), field (9719), golden green (9240), eggplant (9316), rust (9392), antique gold (9332), putty (9241) and burgundy (9210) are no longer made, and there is no kit for Design 1. In Design 2, only chocolate (0867) is still made; our shop calls it chocolate heather. Our dark green No. 2 kit uses 9966 cypress green heather for loden green (9239) — a very dark olive green, noticeably lighter than the near-black body in the photo; 9965 chartreuse green heather for golden green (9240), lighter and more yellow than the spikes in the photo, and for straw (9720), very close; 1230 highland green for field (9719) and putty (9241) — a brownish khaki-olive, clearly darker and browner than the yellowish khaki of the putty in the photo; 0058 dark grey heather for pond heather (9736), close to the dark slate grey; 0867 chocolate heather for dark sienna (9118), almost the same colour; 9971 amber heather for rust (9392) — a copper-orange heather, clearly lighter and more orange than the brick red in the photo; and 0057 grey heather for gray fleck (0042), a plain neutral grey, a little darker, without the red and blue flecks.
Which size should I knit?
Design 1 has four sizes, XS to L, with a chest of 102, 106, 111 and 115 cm, 62, 65, 68 and 70 cm long to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 37, 39, 39 and 40 cm to the underarm. Design 2 has five, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm; its sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. In both, the body’s 132 to 156 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Design 1: red brown (M) 5 (6, 6, 7) and 1 ball each of the nine other colours — 14 (15, 15, 16) balls. Design 2: loden green (M) 5 (6, 6, 7, 8) and 1 ball each of the nine other colours — 14 (15, 15, 16, 17) balls; one set of amounts for both sleeve lengths. The hat’s list names its seven colours, all from Design 1, but gives no amounts. Its ear flaps and first 4 rounds are dark denim heather (B) and its crown red brown (M); the 16-round band between them uses all seven.
Design 1 has no neck instructions — what do I do?
That is right: the leaflet’s instructions for Design 1 end when the yoke chart is done, at 68 (70, 72, 78) stitches — there is no neckband, cast-off or making up. Its materials list has 4.5 mm double-pointed needles that the text never uses, and in the photo the neck is a tall dark band. One way to finish it is to change to the 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, knit a few centimetres of stocking stitch in red brown and cast off loosely, so the neck rolls like the hem and cuffs, then graft the underarms (our suggestion, not the leaflet’s — it gives a lower neck than the tall one in the photo). Design 2’s instructions are complete.
Which key do I use for Design 2?
The one beside its chart on page 5, which starts with 9239 loden green. Page 4 also prints a key, under Design 2’s materials list, but it is Design 1’s key (it starts with 9315 red brown) and its symbols mean other colours — ignore it there.
Anything else to watch for?
A few small things. The two designs use golden green and field in opposite places: in Design 1 the big spikes at the foot of the yoke are field (A) and the band above them golden green (B); in Design 2 the spikes are golden green (A) and the zigzag above them field (B). Follow each design’s own key. The man’s sleeve length for Design 2, size XS, is printed “°46” — it means 46 cm. In both designs the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the total is right, so knit it as written. The smaller sizes skip the yoke rounds marked beside each chart. Design 2’s needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 46 stitches — about 31 to 35 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters and the hat are — though the leaflet gives no instructions for the tall neck on Design 1. The young man’s light trousers and the woman’s jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both sweaters and the hat; Design 1’s page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, instructions, chart and key; a page with the end of Design 1’s yoke and the hat, with its photo, materials, tension, instructions and two charts; Design 2’s page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and all the instructions; a page with Design 2’s chart and key; and Ístex’s back cover.
