Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 19 — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Gray fleck (0042) and ash (9364) are no longer made by Ístex. This kit has grey heather (0057) in place of gray fleck — the main colour (M): the body, the sleeves and the grey background of the charts. No Álafosslopi made today has coloured flecks, so the small red, blue and orange flecks you see in the photo will not be there. Grey heather is a plain, neutral mid grey, darker than the body looks in the sunlit photo, where the grey looks warm and brownish. Light ash heather (0054) is in place of ash — colour B: the pale band under the zigzag at the hem and cuffs, the background of the leaf band in the yoke, and the top rounds between the spikes at the neck. It is a very pale grey, close to the ash in the photo but a little greyer, so it will show as a slightly different shade from the light beige next to it, where the photo shows almost the same cream. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The pattern gives one yarn amount for both sleeve lengths.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 6 balls of grey heather, 2 of black sheep heather, 1 of light ash heather and 2 of light beige heather — 11 balls. XS uses 9 balls, S and M 10, and L 11. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Which photo shows this version?
The man on the hillside against the blue sky — Design 19, knitted in the original gray fleck and ash. The woman by the stone wall wears Design 18 from the same leaflet, light blue with navy and white, sold as a separate kit (Lopi 18 No. 18). The dark trousers in the photo are not part of the pattern.
Anything to watch for?
The charts are drawn once for both designs, each with its own key — use the key for Design 19. It lists ash and light beige twice, because in the top band near the neck (rounds 34 to 42) the two designs use their colours B and C the other way round; that is not a mistake. In the key, 0042 gray fleck is the grey heather in this kit and 9364 ash is the light ash heather; “black sheep” (0052) and “light beige” (0086) are the black sheep heather and light beige heather. Start Chart 1 where it marks your size (“begin body”) or “begin sleeve”. In sizes XS, M and L the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the totals are right, so knit it as written. By our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to about 4 cm less than the printed length to the front neck (about 58 cm against 62 cm in XS). The folded neckband (8 cm, folded in half) adds about 4 cm at the front neck, so the printed length may include it; the pattern does not say. The body is knitted to a set length before the yoke — 38 to 44 cm — so if you want to change the length, do it there.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles.
