Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 18 & 19 — your questions, answered

What are No. 18 and No. 19?
Two numbers in Ístex’s Lopi 18 book for the same sweater in two colourways, printed in one leaflet as Design 18 and Design 19: the same sizes, instructions, charts and yarn amounts, with a colour key for each. Design 18 is light blue — M 0008 light denim heather, A 0051 white, B 0010 dark denim heather and C 0118 navy. Design 19 is grey — M 0042 gray fleck, A 0052 black sheep, B 9364 ash and C 0086 light beige. In the photos a woman wears Design 18 and a man Design 19; both designs have the women’s and the men’s sleeve lengths.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For Design 18, yes — all four are still made by Ístex. Our shop calls 0010 denim heather (the pattern says dark denim heather), so go by the colour numbers. For Design 19, two of the four are still made: black sheep (0052) and light beige (0086), which our shop calls black sheep heather and light beige heather. Gray fleck (0042) and ash (9364) are no longer made. Our grey No. 19 kit uses 0057 grey heather for gray fleck — a plain, neutral mid grey, darker than the body looks in the sunlit photo, and without the small red, blue and orange flecks — and 0054 light ash heather for ash, a very pale grey, close to the ash in the photo but a little greyer.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm to the underarm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body’s 128 to 160 stitches come to 98 to 123 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round — choose by that.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same for both designs: M 5 (5, 5, 6, 6), A 2, B 1 and C 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) — 9 balls in XS, 10 in S and M, 11 in L and XL. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Why does each key list two colours twice?
Because in the top band near the neck (rounds 34 to 42) the two designs use their colours B and C the other way round: in Design 18 the crossed squares are dark denim heather and the V squares navy; in Design 19 the crossed squares are light beige and the V squares ash. That is not a mistake — use the key for your design.
Anything else to watch for?
Start chart 1 where it marks your size (“begin body”) or “begin sleeve”; chart 2 also marks a start for each size. In size L the sleeves have 46 stitches, which do not divide by chart 1’s 8-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm (our calculation). In sizes XS, M and L the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the totals are right, so knit it as written. By our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to about 4 cm less than the printed length to the front neck (about 58 cm against 62 cm in XS); the folded neckband (8 cm, folded in half) adds about 4 cm at the front neck, so the printed length may include it — the pattern does not say. The body is knitted to a set length before the yoke, 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm, so if you want to change the length, do it there (our suggestion). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters are. On the woman (Design 18), the white polo neck under the sweater and the jeans are not; on the man (Design 19), the dark trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (Design 19), a page with a small photo of Design 18, the materials for both designs, the sizes, the tension, both charts and a key for each design, a page with all the instructions, and Ístex’s back cover.
