Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 18 — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The pattern gives one yarn amount for both sleeve lengths.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 6 balls of light denim heather, 2 of white, 1 of denim heather and 2 of navy — 11 balls. XS uses 9 balls, S and M 10, and L 11. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
The pattern says “dark denim heather” — which ball is that?
Colour B, 0010 — called Denim Heather in our shop. Go by the colour number.
Which photo shows this version?
The woman by the stone wall — Design 18, light blue with navy, dark denim and white. The man on the hillside wears Design 19 from the same leaflet, grey with black and cream, sold as a separate kit (Lopi 18 No. 19) with two colours replaced. The white polo neck and the jeans in the photo are not part of the pattern.
Anything to watch for?
The charts are drawn once for both designs, each with its own key — use the key for Design 18. It lists dark denim heather and navy twice, because in the top band near the neck (rounds 34 to 42) the two designs use their colours B and C the other way round; that is not a mistake. Start Chart 1 where it marks your size (“begin body”) or “begin sleeve”. In sizes XS, M and L the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the totals are right, so knit it as written. By our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to about 4 cm less than the printed length to the front neck (about 58 cm against 62 cm in XS). The folded neckband (8 cm, folded in half) adds about 4 cm at the front neck, so the printed length may include it; the pattern does not say. The body is knitted to a set length before the yoke — 38 to 44 cm — so if you want to change the length, do it there.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles.
