Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 17 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Medium brown tweed (9453) is no longer made by Ístex. This kit has acorn heather (0053) in its place — the main colour (M), used for the body, sleeves, ribs, yoke background, front bands and collar. It is very close to the warm mid-brown in the photo (our comparison of the photo with the yarn), but a plain heather: the small white and black tweed flecks will not be there, so your sweater will look smoother than the one in the photo. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, S to XL, with a chest of 100 to 123 cm and a length of 65 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 43 to 45 cm for women and 48 to 50 cm for men.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 9 balls of acorn heather, 2 of white and 1 of black heather — 12 balls. S uses 7 balls of acorn heather, M and L use 8. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the front cut open?
Yes, as the pattern is written. After round 16 of the yoke chart, the 5 centre-front stitches go on a holder and a purl stitch is cast on at each side. When the knitting is done, you sew two rows of machine stitching into each purl stitch and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also lets you knit the yoke back and forth in rows instead, with a garter edge stitch at each side, so there is nothing to cut. It refers to an illustration of the cut on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it.
How do the buttons work?
There are three: two in the knitted buttonhole band and one at the base of the collar. The pattern gives both versions — buttons on the left front for women, on the right front for men. Each band has a facing that folds over the cut edge and is sewn down inside. The buttons are not included, and the pattern gives no size.
Anything to watch for?
Three small things. The collar starts with 7 band stitches, the yoke stitches and 7 band stitches, decreased to 72 (72) 76 (76): that count comes right if you leave out the two purl stitches at the cut edge, which sit under the bands (our calculation). The collar buttonhole is not described — make it like the band buttonholes (P2tog, yarn forward). And on the sleeves, work the first increase on round 2, then 6 (7) 6 (7) more, to reach the printed 54 (56) 60 (62) stitches.
Is the cream top in the photo part of the pattern?
No — the cream polo neck is worn under the sweater. The pattern is the sweater only; its collar is the brown rib, folded over.
Is there a version without the opening?
Lopi 18 no. 16, by the same designer, has a similar yoke with a plain crew neck, in black and blues — we sell it as the Árvakur kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 46 stitches — too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Buttons are not included.
