Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 17 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the three are still made by Ístex: white (0051) and black heather (0005). The main colour, medium brown tweed (9453) — the body, sleeves, ribs, yoke background, front bands and collar — is no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 0053 acorn heather in its place: very close to the warm mid-brown in the photo (our comparison of the photo with the yarn), but a plain heather, without the small white and black tweed flecks.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, S to XL, with a chest of 100, 108, 115 and 123 cm and a length of 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men, and the body is 40 (42, 43, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so choose by the chest measurement you want — it is the measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: medium brown tweed (9453) 7 (8, 8, 9), white (0051) 2 and black heather (0005) 1 in every size — 10 (11, 11, 12) balls. The pattern gives one set of amounts for both sleeve lengths.
How is the front opening made?
As the pattern is written, it is cut. After round 16 of the yoke chart, the 5 centre-front stitches go on a holder and a stitch is cast on at each side; these two stitches are purled up to the neck. When the knitting is done, you sew two rows of machine stitching in the centre of each purl column and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The button band is cast on separately with 10 stitches — rib and a 3-stitch facing — and knitted until, slightly stretched and starting 1.5 cm below the opening, it reaches the neckline; the buttonhole band is knitted from the 5 held stitches. Both are sewn on, with the facing folded over the cut edge and slip-stitched. The pattern also lets you knit the yoke back and forth in rows instead, with a garter edge stitch at each side, so there is nothing to cut. It refers to an illustration of the cut on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it.
How do the buttons work?
There are three: the first 2 cm above the start of the opening, the last 2 cm above the beginning of the collar, so two are in the buttonhole band and one in the collar. The buttons go on the left front for women and on the right front for men. The pattern gives no button size; in the photo they are dark and round.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The collar starts with 7 band stitches, the yoke stitches and 7 band stitches, decreased to 72 (72, 76, 76): that count comes right if you leave out the two purl stitches at the cut edge, which sit under the bands (our calculation). The collar buttonhole is not described — make it like the band buttonholes (P2tog, yarn forward) (our suggestion). On the sleeves, work the first increase on round 2, then 6 (7, 6, 7) more, to reach the printed 54 (56, 60, 62) stitches. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 46 stitches — too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is, with its collar folded over. The cream polo neck under it and her dark trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with a photo, the materials, sizes, tension and most of the instructions, a page with the rest of the bands, the collar, the key and both charts, and Ístex’s back cover.
