Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 15 — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
Dark sienna (9118), vanilla (9718) and golden green (9240) are no longer made by Ístex. Chocolate heather (0867) takes the place of dark sienna. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the charts: the welt, body, sleeves, front bands and the brown in the yoke — 8 of the 12 balls. It is a dark brown heather of the same depth, but less red than the cardigan looks in the photo, where low sun warms every colour. If you would like a redder body, sheep sorrel (1237) is a redder dark shade. Ray of light (1235) takes the place of vanilla. It is colour A, the filled dots: the pale lines in the borders and the pale zigzags, motifs and spokes in the yoke. It is a pale warm cream with a slight peach tint; the vanilla in the photo looks more yellow. Highland green (1230) takes the place of golden green. It is colour B, the open circles: the green in the borders and the green bands in the yoke. It is a little browner than the olive green in the photo. Black (0059) is still made and is the black in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 105 to 126 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The buttonholes go on the right front for women and on the left front for men.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 8 balls of chocolate heather, 2 of ray of light, 1 of highland green and 1 of black — 12 balls. XS uses 6 balls of chocolate heather, S and M 7, and L 8. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of machine stitching into each and cut between them once the button band is knitted, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead, with no cutting.
Anything to watch for?
The pattern refers to an illustration of the cut front on page 3 that is not in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. At the underarms, in sizes XS, M and XL each sleeve puts one stitch more on the holder than the body (10 against 9 in XS), so you graft one stitch more on the sleeve side; ease it in (our suggestion). The neckband count of 69 (69 69 77 77) stitches works out if you leave out the purl stitch at each end of the yoke (our calculation).
Is the black polo neck in the photo part of the pattern?
No — it is worn under the cardigan, and the black trousers are not part of the pattern either. The cardigan has a short patterned neckband, folded to the inside, with the top button in it.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. Buttons are not included.
